Review: Men in Black III (2012)

Are there truly no more stories left in the universe to tell? Men in Black III not only is a sequel coming out 10 years after the last iteration in the series, but also features a highly predictable story line that we’ve seen over and over already. In present day, a murderous alien called Boris the Animal (Jermaine Clement) escapes from a prison on the moon and travels back in time to the 1960s to kill Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) before he can imprison Boris. Agent J (Will Smith) wakes up one day to find that Agent K no longer exists in his world. Figuring out Boris’ plan to kill K must have succeeded, J travels back in time to stop Boris from killing K.

MIB III did not deliver as an action flick or a comedy. The movie’s attempts at humor fell flat, only managing to make me crack a smile at a couple of points during the film, and on the action side of things the story held no thrills or surprises to it. It was a powerfully mediocre film, one that’s nicely paced but without ever feeling like it’s moving anywhere. The biggest positive I have to mention about the film is that Josh Brolin did a great job channeling a young Tommy Lee Jones.

Action Rating: 2 ½ Will Smith “Dayums” out of Five

WTF! G.I. Joe: Retaliation Postponed!

The sinking of Battleship in the box office has Hasbro running scared. It’s been announced that Hasbro will postpone the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation until March 29, 2013. It was originally set to be released next month, but was pushed back in order to convert the film to 3D. In Hasbro’s press release, they stated that evidence supports that 3D pulls in more viewers and is a big draw internationally. I personally despise post conversion 3D films and am extremely disappointed. I was excited to see this one next month, but I guess I’ll have to wait.

Other factors that could have contributed to the postponement are, of course, the box office bombing of Hasbro’s Battleship, the fierce competition from summer blockbusters (thus the new release date in March), and the new comedy Ted’s release date was changed to the same weekend as G.I. Joe’s original date. It all comes down to money.

Cinemax Femme Fatales Season 2 Red Carpet

Actress Madison Dylan (left) shares her excitement with guest writer Elizabeth Ann (right) on the red carpet for Cinemax's Femme Fatales season 2.

Cinemax’s Friday night darling Femme Fatales had a delightfully sexy red carpet premiere at the Arclight Theatre in Hollywood on Monday. Many of the series sensual stars were in attendance, along with show runners Mark A. Altman and Steve Kriozere. Having recently interviewed some of the cast, it was a pleasure to attend the red carpet, screening, and celebration.

The screening presented two season 2 episodes: “Gun Crazy” with guest Antonio Sabato, Jr. and “Trophy Wife” with guests Chris Mulkey and Leliani Sarrell. Both episodes fit nicely into the world of Cuesta Verde, where all the Femme Fatales live. Neither stands out as outside the box; however, later episodes of the season, “Bad Science” and “Libra,” bring sci-fi and superheroes into the mix, respectively. If you enjoyed the first season, the second promises to continue to give you what you want: thriller stories, full of strong women, and that erotic content that Cinemax made its name for.

The actual red carpet was shorter than expected, thus photographers and reporters were squished and squeezed together in order to capture the arrivals of each guest. With limited time to chat, I mainly hit them with two questions: What is your favorite thing about being a Femme Fatale? And what is your favorite method for getting back at someone who has wronged you?

  • Scheana Marie:
“I get to be extra crazy!”
“To wrong them how they wronged me.”
  • Jennifer Roa :
“All the women are strong, kick butt women as focal point is new. Great to be a part of that movement.”
“The best kind of punishment is the one where no one sees it coming.”
  • Leilani Sarelle :
“I respond to the film noir-ish idea of being a femme fatale. My favorite role in any movie, To Have or Have Not, Lauren Bacall- she kicked ass.”
“Lying! (laughs) Really thrilling and fun!”
  • Sadie Alexandru :
“I love being powerful! The show uses sensuality and sexuality in a way that was really fun for us as actresses.”
“I dunno, I don’t think I’m very aggressive. I think you’ve just got to move on.”
  • Tiffany Brouwer:
“You get to kick butt. You get to be the one that survives. You get to be evil.”
“Characterwise, she would throw some supernatural muscle at the wrongdoer.”
  • Raymond Forchion:
(Only asked the second question regarding method of revenge) “I’m a big believer in karma- can walk away and the universe will be on my side.”
  • Ashley Noel:
    “It was empowering. So fun.”
“I would say sheer female intelligence can really take down a man- don’t underestimate the smart girl.”
  • Nikki Griffin:
    “I love that a woman’s in power!”
“I’m not really much on the revenge front. I think that happiness is the best revenge. That’s the way to show someone that you just don’t care.”
  • Catherine Annette:
    “Killing people.”
(Her chosen method is pure torture- for reference, see Charlie O’Connell’s characters death in “Girls Gone Dead”)
  • Madison Dylan:
“To be a woman empowered, that’s able to take advantage of guys!”
“To play very stupid, ditzy, but then I get to come back and spark the whole meanness inside!”

I asked Catherine Annette who is truly the mastermind, her character Tiffany or Madison Dylan’s Alexis? Her response was that they were probably equal but Tiffany has more “control because she is smart enough to keep her hands clean, leaving others to take the fall for her crimes.” Both characters return in the second season. Madison Dylan admitted in our previous interview to recently becoming a geek, so I asked her who her favorite superhero is. Iron Man won out, but Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk came in a close second. Nikki Griffin who appears later in season two, claims Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Spike as her favorite vampire and dreams of becoing part of a Joss Whedon project in the future. Leilani Sarelle was thrilled to chat with Action Flick Chick because one of her personal goals is to play butt-kicking women; she recently completed work on Relentless Justice where her character seeks revenge on her daughter’s kidnapper… oh, and she just happens to be a former mercenary. Because Ray Forchion was the only gentleman I grabbed, I skipped the Femme Fatale question and asked if his character got what he deserved. “I don’t think so. But it gets pretty rough.” The entire cast shared their excitement over Femme Fatales second season.

Season 2 premieres at 11pm on Cinemax this Friday, May 25, 2012.

Dallas Comic Con 2012: Summer Glau Talks Firefly, Terminator, Knights of Badassdom, and More!

Dallas Comic Con had a fantastic line up and the biggest turnout I’ve ever seen in the years I’ve been attending. The halls were packed with people perusing the exhibit hall and waiting in line for autographs. Part of the cause for excitement was special guest Summer Glau, who starred in Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Dollhouse.

During her Q&A session, she discussed how Firefly was her first job and Joss Whedon was her first boss. What an awesome initiation into the business, eh? She said Joss created a “safe environment to make mistakes and I did make a lot of mistakes.” Moderator and DCC organizer, Devin Pike, then asked her what one memory was she would always remember from the set of Firefly to which she replied: “The moment for me was definitely the scene from ‘Objects in Space’ when I was in the cargo bay and all of a sudden there were leaves all over the floor. I reached down to grab a branch. Joss was there, and it was just a really powerful moment for me. This is what I love about science fiction. We were on a space ship, but I’m standing on golden leaves. I felt like it was so organic, it was poetry, it was beautiful. Joss was there and that is my favorite episode of the series. I will never forget that moment. It was so special for me.”

Glau has a new film coming out later this year called Knights of Badassdom, with her and a group of people LARPing, also starring Steve Zahn, Danny Pudi, Peter Dinklage, and several others. She said filming Knights of Badassdom was “the craziest summer camp experience I never had and never thought I would have.” She described it as a “fantasy gone wrong thriller” that is hysterical, “I’ve never laughed that hard in my life.” This would mark the first comedy she’s worked on and reported having a blast doing it. When it came to her LARPing skills, however, she said she was just a beginner and in order to succeed you had to be fearless. She recognized it being difficult and a whole other kind of art form.

Other tid bits we learned about Summer Glau from the mix of audience and moderator questions:

  • Her favorite actor to work with from Firefly was Sean Maher.
  • She was a vegetarian until she started eating meat for the extra protein while working out for her role in Serenity. She never went back to being vegetarian after that!
  • She would love to star in a period piece such as a Jane Austen film.
  • She has a favorite role that she’s done, but she never says what it is. “It’s like children, you can’t say you have a favorite.”
  • She will never give up hope that she can go back and continue the Terminator series in any form be it movie or animation. She would definitely come back for the role if it ever did happen and thought the whole original cast would as well.
  • When asked if she has a specific process when getting in the mind set to play a character she replied with, “I wish I had a better answer, but I really just pretend to be that character. It’s worked out for me so far.” That’s an amazing answer and the best I’ve heard from anyone!
  • The hardest part about playing a terminator in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was not being able to give reactions to the other actors, especially Lena Headey. She said Lena would be very emotional and anguished in a scene and she would only be able to stare at her blankly. “I felt like I was cheating.”

Summer Glau seemed like a very nice and sweet woman; you could really see the passion she has for acting and the love she has for all her past roles. If you get the chance to meet her or see her in a panel, take that opportunity. She’s done some great work and still has more to come!
