Dredd (2012): You Don’t Have to Dread Seeing Dredd!

Let Action Chick go ahead and drop a wisdom bomb on you guys: Dredd is good! Yay! I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve seen a new release that was good, but Dredd entertains with a ton of action and decent story line…nothing like the 1995 Sylvester Stallone movie Judge Dredd. Still not convinced? This film is like The Raid: Redemption, only with two good guys in the fight and a crazy, evil woman as the big bad!

Behind the Scenes: Robocop Reboot is Robocrap and Hit Girl’s All Growed Up

Hit Girl may have to change her name to Hit Woman pretty soon, because these pics from the set of Kickass 2 show off an older, more mature Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz). This is one chick who is definitely pumped for every pic and tibdit to come out about this flick, as Hit Girl is one of the most ball-busting, ass-kicking chicks in comic and movie history, and I can’t wait to see her in action again.

Here’s Hit Girl in her civvies, giving Kickass the cold shoulder.

…And here she is, suited up and ready to slice and dice some baddies.

Now, did that get your blood pumping? Well too bad, because it’s about to freeze! Pics of Robocop’s suit in the Robocop remake have finally been released, and the results are… well, they’re about as generic as they come. Enjoy, I guess?

Resident Evil: Retribution – Someone Put a Bullet in this Franchise, Please!

If you want to see Resident Evil: Retribution but are on a tight budget, just watch a gif of Milla Jovovich shooting zombies over and over, without ever bothering to take cover or reload, and you’ve essentially seen this film. Jovovich returns as Alice in the fifth installment of the Resident Evil series, along with many familiar faces you’ve either seen in the first four films or played in the video game world. For the two of you who are interested, I’ll keep the returning faces a surprise.

As far as story coherence, dramatic tension, character development or original ideas, Resident Evil: Retribution is a very bad film. What really happened in this film? They escape from an Umbrella facility. That’s it. This film has the least amount of plot I’ve ever seen in an action movie- and action films aren’t known for having a lot of plot. I actually asked myself, “What is the point of all this? Why?” and I rarely ask those questions of an action movie. I’ve trained myself to take what little plot there is in stride and just enjoy the action; but when there isn’t even a thread of rhyme or reason as to why the big bad is suddenly trying to rescue his nemesis, and characters constantly do things without even a shred of explanation, I can’t help but wonder, “What’s going on?”

One thing’s for sure, though, Resident Evil: Retribution has the most non-stop action of any film I can think of. The opening action sequence was in slow motion and in reverse, which was pretty cool, and the action didn’t stop after that either, moving right into the next battle and the next one… and the next one. It literally felt like 90 minutes of Milla Jovovich shooting things; and normally that would’ve made me ecstatic, but there has got to be some worthwhile goal the film is working toward and this one just didn’t have it.

It was full of recycled ideas like saddling Alice with a kid (like they did in the second film) and trying to escape an enclosed place before X thing happens (like they did in the first and second film), and zombies shooting guns, which basically removed the last vestige of difference between the generic zombies and generic umbrella soldiers. I finally got interested in the film during the last scene when they sort of explained what was happening and were facing a big battle, and then the film ended. Fans of the Resident Evil films could easily skip Resident Evil: Retribution and miss nothing; just watch the next inevitable entry in this franchise, one that will hopefully (I can’t believe I’m saying this) provide more plot to go along with the endless parade of nonstop bullets and zombies.

Action Rating: Now, as the Action Chick,  I have to rate this film for its action, not for how good it is otherwise, which is why I rate it 5 Zombies Shooting Guns, out of 5!

This is the Action Flick Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!

Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo (Elvira’s Too) Sept. 15-16

Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, this weekend at the Los Angeles Convention Center, features a number of my friends, accomplices, and past interviewees. Stan Lee and Cassandra Peterson (Elvira, Mistress of the Dark) have partnered with the con’s founders to put together something that looks like a ton of fun. Guests of honor include Kevin Smith, Felicia Day, Adam West, Julie Newmar, and AFC contest judge Norman Reedus. Featured guests and panelists include Lou Ferrigno, Team Unicorn, Adrianne Curry, Sean Patrick Flanery, Holly Conrad, Kristen Nedopak, Stephanie Thorpe, Amber Benson, Cricket Lee, Brian Buccellato, Alina Andrei, Nathan Hamill, Jenna Busch, Jessica Merizan, Alan Kistler, Dr. Travis Langley, and so many more.  If you’re in the L.A. area, check it out!

On the Hard Rock Cafe red carpet, Stan Lee gives Katrina the final word on which superpower would be worst. ‘Nuff said!

Comikaze guests Adrianne Curry (left) and Holly Conrad (right) with Katrina after “The Most Dangerous Women at Comic-Con” panel.

About Comikaze Expo:

Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo is the brainchild of siblings Regina, Fabiano, and Mario Carpinelli, who grew up in Southern California. Since childhood, they’ve been immersed in a world of comics, gaming, horror, sci-fi, fantasy and anime. With the help of close friends Klaus Moeller and Shelle Mannion, big comic fans themselves, this collective of family and friends created the event that has always been missing from the city of Los Angeles.

After the success of their inaugural event in 2011, which brought in a whopping 35,000 attendees, Comikaze Expo was approached by living legend Stan Lee and his company Pow! Entertainment. Stan was impressed by the show and offered to purchase a percentage of the company. Thus, turning Comikaze Expo into Stan Lee’s Comikaze. Soon after, Cassandra Peterson, also known as Elvira Mistress of the Dark, followed suit. Now, for the first time in history, a comic book convention is owned by legendary pop-culture icons.

Stan Lee’s Comikaze is unlike any other comic-related event in the United States. Having spent much time researching both local and national conventions in the United States, the Comikaze Team crafted an event that will thrill and excite even the most casual comic fan. Stan Lee’s Comikaze is a multi-tiered extravaganza created by real comic fans with deep ties to the entertainment world. While Stan Lee’s Comikaze might have a classic convention vibe, it’s much more than that. The Comikaze Team did not want to make an event for industry people and hardcore fans only. Instead, they designed a more balanced event as an alternative to the standard fan convention, dedicated to the Los Angeles and geek community above all else.

Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo is an integral part of the city of Los Angeles, something both residents and visitors can enjoy for years to come. Drawing inspiration from the city and the fans, Stan Lee’s Comikaze is an eclectic mix of LA and geek culture. Stan Lee’s Comikaze strives to create something unique for the city of Los Angeles. Between the convention and pre-events there will undoubtably be something for everyone to enjoy.

Transformers 4 Rolling Without Optimus Prime?

Transformers 4 is in the works; and, even though it has a distant 2014 release date, it’s already creating a buzz amongst fans. TFW2005 reports the info Hasbro representatives said about the  upcoming sequel- including an all new cast of not just new humans, but Transformers as well, due partly because the toy sales were not up to par after Transformers 3: “Regarding toy sales… it’s because of same characters in all three movies. This is why Transformers 4 will have a new cast of [robot] characters and it will be a story revolving around these new characters.”

No Optimus Prime or Megatron? Sure, because getting rid of your best Transformers so you can sell new toys worked great in the ’80s animated Transformers flick – oh wait, no it didn’t. it made legions of kids cry. All brands go through this “freshening up” phase to keep products moving, but as a fan of the robots from Transformers, I’m a little hesitant to see how this plays out. Right now I’ll keep an open mind, but what about you? Is this going to suck energon or recharge the franchise?

This is the Action Flick Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!
