The Walking Dead Season 2 Premieres!

AMC premiered the second season of their original television show, The Walking Dead, last night. The show is set in a post-zombie-apocalypse world where a small group of survivors are trying to figure out what the hell to do. In the group of survivors are leader Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), his wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), son Carl (Chandler Riggs), best friend Shane (Jon Bernthal), and some strays including Andrea (Laurie Holden), Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn), Glenn (Steven Yeun), T-Dog (IronE Singleton), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Carol (Melissa Suzanne McBride), and her daughter Sophia (Madison Lintz).

The second season is off to a great start so far. The 1 ½ hour premiere was tense and full of fantastically disgusting gore and action. The zombies, as always, look amazing, which is good because the first 20 minutes or so is jam-packed with them, which I loved.

Norman Reedus’s Daryl has easily become my favorite character. He really proved himself to be a badass and clever in this first episode. Andrea is getting pretty tough too, but that’s all I’ll say so I don’t spoil anything. Overall, the first episode was a good start, though it wandered a bit towards the middle, it ended with a bang of a cliffhanger to make sure you come back for more.

Spoilers Below!

Here’s what happens in a nutshell: Picking up from the explosion in the season finale of season 1, the group drives away and decide to try some fort I can’t remember the name of. As they’re driving, they come to a road block of cars and then are forced to stop when Dale’s RV breaks down. While Dale tries to fix the car, everyone rummages through the surrounding cars for supplies. And then a zombie appears. And then another one, and another one, until they see that there is a whole heard of zombies coming right for them. Most of the group hides underneath the cars while the zombies pass. Andrea is inside the RV and didn’t get the memo about the oncoming zombie attack so she’s just putting her gun back together when the horde reaches the RV. She hides in the bathroom, is attacked by one zombie, but manages to kill it with a screw driver to the eyeball. T-Dog cuts his arm on a car and is about to get eaten when Daryl comes to the rescue by shoving an arrow through the zombies head. He then covers himself and T-Dog with dead people and go unnoticed by the heard.

Sophia (the little girl) gets attacked and runs off into the woods. Rick is the only one nice enough to run after her. He tells her to hide, he’ll lead the zombies away from her, then she can go back to the group. He fulfills his part of the plan, but then Sophia gets lost. They spend the rest of the episode looking for her.

Shane decides he’s going to go off on his own the first chance he gets and Andrea asks to go with him. In the end, the group is out in the woods looking for Sophia when Shane, Rick, and Carl see a deer. Carl walks up to it. It’s a peaceful, quiet scene…then someone shoots the deer. Or maybe a gun hidden inside the deer goes off. Either way the bullet goes right through the deer and into Carl. The episode ends with Carl laying on the ground bleeding with Shane and Rick standing over him.

Likes:

  • The theme song (I’d forgotten how appropriately scary it is! Bear Mcreary is an awesome musician!)
  • The zombie make up
  • Daryl cutting open that one zombie for an autopsy. He does it like a boss!
  • The opening scene with the herd of zombies
  • The ending
  • Daryl killing the zombie by shoving an arrow up through the head and then saving himself and T-Dog by putting dead zombies on top of themselves.

Dislikes

  • Spending all that time looking for the lost kid, it starts to drag on.
  • All the freakin’ commercials! It seemed like the episode was really 60 minutes long (if that) with 30 minutes of commercials.

I’ll agree that the search for the kid seems to be dragging on a bit. Eventually it would be, sorry, but we gotta keep moving.

The first episode of season 2 though has me feeling better after what I felt was a letdown at the end of season 1.

Andrea is quickly becoming annoying IMHO. Like… light speed.
