Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, a film set in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica universe, premieres on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital download tomorrow. Its story follows different members from two models of Cylon, played by Dean Stockwell and Tricia Helfer, shortly after the destruction of the Twelve Colonies which occurred in the new series’ original pilot mini-series on SyFy (then known as the Sci-Fi Channel). Director Edward James Olmos, who plays Commander (later Admiral) Adama in the series, says that after Galactica fans see this film, “they’re all going to have to go back and watch the entire series again” because it throws a whole new light on the entire show.
I spoke with star Dean Stockwell about The Plan and his experiences with fan conventions. He hasn’t attended nearly as many as you might expect. When he learned I was covering the convention for the G4TV series Attack of Show!, he asked what kind of name that was for a TV show: “What does that even mean?” Good question.
AFC: How many conventions have you gone to ?
Dean: I haven’t kept count. It seems like about 4 or 5 or 6, that’s all.
AFC: What do you like the most about going to conventions?
Dean: Well, it’s an occasion to travel. I’ve done some in Ireland and England. That’s nice to get schlepped over there and see a different country.
AFC: And are you working on any projects right now?
Dean: Not now, no, I’m not, but I have a project that has not come out yet that I’m pretty excited about, that was done after the end of the Battlestar Galactica series. We did a two-hour DVD movie which hasn’t come out yet, and I have a hunch it’s gonna be really good.
FYI: When I first saw Dean beforehand, he was outside smoking a cigar just like on Quantum Leap. I suspect he introduced the cigars to the role and not the other way around.
