Underworld: Awakening (2012)

Kate Beckinsale is back and more of a gorgeous badass than ever before! In Underworld: Awakening, she reprises her role as Selene, a vampire with a cold gaze and enough cold-blooded ruthlessness to keep an entire meat freezer cool. In this fourth installment of the Underworld series, the humans have discovered that vampires and Lycans exist and freak out resulting in a mass persecution of the “diseased.” Selene and her hybrid lover from the first two films, Michael, end up captured by the humans and cryogenically frozen to be used as research subjects for a “cure.”

Beware Spoilers Below!

Fast forward 12 years later, Selene finds herself rescued by a mysterious benefactor. After killing a crap ton of guards, she escapes the lab and goes in search of Michael, but finds instead that she has a 12 year old hybrid daughter, Eve (India Eisley), who was actually the one who helped Selene escape the lab.

Eve is a hot commodity to the Lycans, specifically Dr. Lang (Stephen Rea), who plans to use her blood to perfect their race, ‘roiding them out to make them bigger, stronger, and immune to silver. He’s already started the experiment on his son producing an Ultra Mega Lycan! (Note: that’s not their official name.) Selene must fight to save her newly discovered daughter from being harvested and save the vampire and human races from being obliterated by the Ultra Mega Lycans!

End of spoilers!

This film starts off with bullets-a-blazing and hardly slows down to take a breath! The few breaths it does take are just to spit out a sentence or two about the small amount of story they have to deal with.

Kate Beckinsale’s mad action skills are nothing short of astonishing. Hell, I think I’ve got a little bit of a girl crush on her! She has the right combination of being fit and powerful looking, and Selene is a cool character. She’s determined, unafraid, and maybe a little cold hearted, but hey, she is a friggin’ vampire so I guess we can let her slide on that last one.

If you’re in the mood for an action movie that’s light on plot and heavy on blood and action, then Underworld: Awakening is a great choice. Maybe if the Twilight films had been a little bit less blah blah blah and a little more of a vampire/werewolf bloodbath then I might not want to punch Edward and Jacob  in the face so bad. But I digress…

Time Until Action: ~ Instantaneous!

Baddies: Lycans!

Major Spoiler Alert!!!!!

Best Kill: Little Eve “hulks out” and goes berserk on Dr. Lang, who is similarly hulked out in his Lycan form. She’s clawing at his face and punching him and he’s returning the favor in kind until finally she gets the upper hand and rips out his throat with her bare hands! Dr. Lang’s throat gets reduced to a blood-gushing hole, and Eve stands over him with bits of his friggin’ windpipe in her hands. Sheesh!

Action Rating: 5 Kate Beckinsale’s Impossibly Tight Body Suits, out of 5!
