Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

YEEHAW! Tired of the cliché horror movies where a group of college kids go on a trip to party in the woods and get picked off one by one by a group of evil rednecks? Then Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is the film for you! This flick is a clever reversal of the psycho hillbilly horror subgenre, and managed to be an original and funny flick, thanks in no small part to a great script and even greater leads. Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine) are two rednecks who go on vacation to an old, dilapidated cabin. In the woods camping close to the cabin is a group of college kids who have seen way too many horror films. When Tucker and Dale actually save one of the girls from drowning, the rest of the group thinks they kidnapped her and start attacking Tucker and Dale in order to “save” their friend. Really, it’s all just a big misunderstanding! It’s like a deranged episode of Three’s Company!

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil manages to do a wonderful job of blending comedy, and, well, black comedy. Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine are both fan-freaking-tastic in this film, as they are in literally everything else I’ve ever seen them in. Combine two great performances with a huge group of idiotic college kids, some fantastically gory and funny death scenes, and you’ve got a flick that’s well worth your time! If you’re in the mood for a smart horror-comedy that takes a tired trope and spins it like a bottle of moonshine, then you should give Tucker and Dale vs. Evil a looky-loo!

Time until real action starts: ~ 1 minute

Baddies: Communication

Best Line: “I never thought I’d say this, but I’m glad I’m not hung like a bear.”

Best Suicide: One of the “bright” college students, Mike (Joseph Allen Sutherland), tries to “save” Allison (Katrina Bowden) by attacking Tucker from behind while he’s throwing wood into the wood chipper. As Tucker turns to get a stick Mike comes running at him fullspeed, but ends up flying head first into the wood chipper! Tucker tries to pull him out as the chipper grinds and chips and spews blood all over the place! Nice try Tucker. I hope you’ll be on the look out for “suicidal” college kids the next time you decide to fire up the wood chipper.

Best Explosion: Chad (Jesse Moss) becomes obsessed with killing Tucker and Dale because he believes they are evil, so he goes inside their cabin and ends up dousing it with gas. One corner catches fire and spreads to another corner full of old gas tanks, and then the whole cabin explodes!

Action Rating: 2 ½ Dang Suicidal College Kids, out of 5.
