The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 3 Review!

(Slight spoilers ahead) I absolutely loved the premiere of AMC’s Walking Dead episode 3, “Save the Last One.” It was a gripping episode that finished with a shocking moment of “Oh no he didn’t!” This episode really focused in on the question of whether living in a world filled with zombies actually better than just dying. Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) was contemplating that while Carl (Chandler Riggs) was hanging on by a thread. Thinking that she might actually have big enough balls to let her son die rather than come back to a horrible world filled with zombies made me like her just a teensy bit. And speaking of Carl, I bet he had an easy couple of days filming. All he has to do is lie in bed and relax!

Andrea still isn’t having ANY of Dale’s good will, or his “do you really think that’s a good idea” suggestions . All she said was “Dale,” but she said it in such a tone that really meant, “Shut the hell up and leave me alone.” Dale, how did you feel about that?

You know, Action Chick, seems like the more I try to help the less people want to hear what I have to say. Just ’cause I’m old doesn’t mean I’m not still relevant, dangit!

Thanks for the update, Dale. This episode scored pretty high in the action department, but what’s really shocking is the direction the writers decided to take Shane’s (Jon Bernthal) character. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) has always been Mr. Moral and usually Shane is right there to support him. Now, however, we are starting to see a darker “survivalist” side to Shane, and I feel like we’re really cooking with gas. Of course, I like him a little less as a person, but he’s a lot more interesting as a character. I’m loving the new season so far!

Beware Full-on Spoilers Below

Here’s what happened:

Shane (Jon Bernthal) and Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince) are stuck inside a school and are surrounded by zombies. They devise a plan where Otis draws the zombies away then he escapes through a locker room window while Shane drops out of a different really high window. He drops down, hurting his leg making his escape much slower so he gets overrun by zombies. There’s a great shot of a zombie walking toward Shane about to get him when his head explodes. The zombie falls to the ground revealing Otis holding a gun. They try to get back to the truck but are low on ammunition, Shane is slowed down by his hurt leg and Otis is slowed down by not being in shape. Right as they’re about to be eaten then it cuts to the others.

T-dog (IronE Singleton) and Glen (Steven Yeun) show up at the doctor’s, um, I mean vet’s house. T-Dogs arm gets his arm sewed up and we learn that Merle was taking antibiotics because he had the clap. Lori contemplates letting Carl die so that he doesn’t have to face a terrible life running from zombies, and Rick does his usual “life is so great speech” to change her mind. Right when Hershel (Scott Wilson), the vet, says a decision has to be made to either operate on Carl without the respirator or let him die, Shane shows up with the medical supplies sans Otis. Shane tells them Otis fell behind and told Shane to keep going, leaving him to get swarmed by the zombies.

Hershel successfully operates on Carl and stabilizes the little bugger, leaving everyone rejoicing for Carl but bummed out for Otis. Shane is ridden with guilt that he couldn’t save Otis, so he goes upstairs for a shower. While he shaves all his hair off his head, we see what really happened to Otis: They were about to be caught by the zombies so the survivalist in Shane comes out and he shoots Otis in the leg! :O He then proceeds to strip Otis of all the supplies he carrying leaves him behind. Otis tries to fight back but he’s been shot! He’s kind of at a disadvantage. So Otis gets torn to shreds by the zombies while he’s still alive. 🙁

Oh yeah, while all this other exciting stuff is going on, Andrea (Laurie Holden) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) go out looking for Sophia (Madison Lintz) again and accomplish nothing other than giving Daryl a few more funny lines, and Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn) and Carol (Melissa Suzanne McBride) watch the RV.

Likes:

  • Shane and Otis action.
  • Andrea basically telling Dale to shut up.
  • Lori contemplating letting Carl die.
  • Nice head shot by Otis.
  • Hanging zombie from the tree with the flesh of his legs eaten down to the bone. Super gross!
  • Merle had the clap! Ha ha!

Dislikes:

  • The whole “Carl’s gonna die” went on a little too long.
  • Otis going bye bye.
  • Not enough Daryl action.

This is the Action Flick Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!

I got the chills from the intro with Shane because you knew something was up… but when they showed it again, aftet we knew, got them even more. Think I’m a fan of Shane still being alive now.
