Episode 10 of The Walking Dead season two, “18 Miles Out,” is one of their best episodes yet! One of my biggest complaints of the show is usually that they often talk too much and don’t get anything accomplished, but this time we had plenty of gory zombie action and what few conversations they did have were interesting and purposeful. With the season gearing up for the finale we’ve got plot points ahoy as characters start jumping down each other’s throats right and left. Let’s check in with Dale to see how he’s holding up.
Thanks, Dale. Now, here’s what happened this week:
Rick, Shane, and Randall’s Story
Rick and Shane take the new kid (Randall) they saved in the previous episode out to an abandoned prison to leave him there…most likely to die even though they saved him. That’s kind of sending mixed signals, don’t ya think? On the way there, Rick stops the car to talk to Shane about what happened with Lori and tells him he’s a threat to everyone. They seem to resolve things well enough and continue on their way.
They reach the prison and scope it out, noticing that none of the dead bodies have bite wounds. Rick concludes that it must be the scratches that infected them then. This seems a logical conclusion, though any online university degree will teach you that conclusions need to be born out of thoughtful research. They leave Randall in the middle of the parking lot, hands and feet tied up, and start to walk away when he starts yelling at them to not leave him, saying that that he went to school with Maggie. Should’ve kept your mouth shut, kid. Now Rick and Shane are worried that if he knows Maggie, then he knows where the farm is. Shane wants to shoot the kid, Rick doesn’t rush into it, and the pair finally do what they’ve wanted to do for two seasons now – they beat each other up.
After they fight for a few minutes, Shane throws a wrench at Rick and breaks a window behind him, letting out a ton of zombies. Shane ends up trapped in a bus, desperately holding off the zombies, and Rick runs off with Randall the new kid, leaving Shane to die. Wait, naw, Rick’s just kiddin’ y’all. He does a drive-by on those zombie suckas and pulls up to the back of Shane’s bus to rescue him. In the end, Rick tells Shane if he wants to stay with them he has to forget about Lori and stop acting crazy.
Lori, Andrea, and Maggie’s Story
The girl whose name I don’t care about that went into shock the last few episodes, whom I will nickname Shocky, comes around long enough to take a dinner knife with the intent to kill herself. Lori notices the missing knife and stops her before Shocky can do anything, then tattles to Maggie.
Andrea tells Lori she shouldn’t have taken the knife away because it’s a person’s own choice to decide if they want to live or die. Lori fires back with “you don’t help around her, all you do is sit on top of the RV with a gun and work on your tan.” Andrea says Lori takes everything for granted and that she gets anything she wants: a husband, son, baby, boyfriend…whoo, if looks could kill…everyone in the show would be dead right now.
Maggie refuses to leave suicidal Shocky alone, so Andrea offers to sit with her. Andrea then tells the girl if this is what she really wants, then she should just do it, and walks out the door, giving Shocky a chance to do a crappy job of slitting her wrists. Maggie gets super pissed that Andrea left suicidal Shocky alone, and even though Shocky lived, Maggie blames Andrea for the whole ordeal and bans her from the house.
No one else was in this episode. I guess Dale was too busy gossiping, Glenn was too busy picking out a new cap and Daryl was too busy being f***ing awesome.
Likes:
- Rick’s head shot of two zombies at once.
- Shane’s pleased as punch expression when he tricks a zombie into getting stabbed by using his blood as bait.
- Andrea letting Shocky make her own decision.
- The zombie’s head getting run over.
- The action.
Dislikes:
- No Dale face, no Dale at all.
- No Daryl.
- Lori is on my crap list for being kind of a beyotch. Has anyone seen my crap list, by the way? It’s a piece of paper that says “Lori” on it.
SHOCKY!
That totally made my Monday morning.
While Lori is a pain in the butt… to be honest I’m really sick of Andrea too. There’s being tough and being an asshole: and IMHO she needs to taste some of her own advice. She told Shane that his intent is right but his delivery is wrong — I feel the same way about her. And there’s always something about her… shit eating/sniffing expression on her face that makes me wanna hit her in the face with a pie 3 Stooges Style.
The tension was well played and came across very well to add to the suspense…
Are Rick and Shane gonna abandon the new boy?
Is Rick going to abandon Shane?
Did Shane get scratched?
I think fans will cheer when Loris number comes up.
Darryl is my fave!
Rick, Daryl, Glenn and Maggie need to just leave everyone else behind and go on their way. All the others are either whiners or jerkfaces.
