The first weekend in January is often seen as the weakest weekend for opening films just because you still have the “amazing” end of year films in theater and a lot of people are looking to either save money after the holidays or go to the gym rather than be sedentary in a theater. So kudos to Season of the Witch for being brave enough to open on this particular weekend even though a lot of people, myself included, automatically think it will suck because of the date it was released (that and because Nicolas Cage has been known to do some real stinkers in the film area). Boy, Season of the Witch has received a pretty heavy bashing from most of the “highly acclaimed” critics and websites; however, they don’t see films the way I see them. Therefore, I say, “Screw you, “highly acclaimed critics! I was taken by surprise and completely enjoyed Season of the Witch!”
The film is about a couple of knights, Behmen (Nicolas Cage) and Felson (Ron Perlman), who were chosen to escort an alleged witch (Claire Foy) to a monastery so that her fate could be decided by a “fair trial.” From what I’ve heard, the old days’ witch trials were about as fair as Bruce Lee fighting a baby.
Nicolas Cage seems like he can’t say no to a film, and that’s part of the reason why I’m a fan and why I thought Season of the Witch was going to suck, but it sure fooled me. It’s not a great movie by any means and some of the special effects looked pretty silly, but it had me engaged from the start to finish. This whole movie is about a group of men and one girl traveling through the woods, and yet I never got bored. I didn’t have one single moment of “I’m bored. Kill something already” because they managed to keep the action coming from all directions. It was fast paced and a tiny bit suspenseful. Season of the Witch was solid entertainment, folks.
