Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is one nerdgasm after another! It’s a video game nerd’s dream come true!

This film was adapted from the graphic novel series with the same name written by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) falls in love with Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). However, in order to date Ramona, Scott must defeat her 7 evil exes. That’s a pretty big life threatening mission to take on for a girl you just met! On the other hand, Ramona has an excellent way of quickly weeding out the guys who aren’t serious… or those who are serious but are wimps. Hmmm, maybe I need a league of evil exes.

Every single person cast in this film did a phenomenal job. I was worried Cera wouldn’t be able to pull off the pumped up Scott Pilgrim but he was the absolute embodiment of Scott. Honestly, every single actor did such a great job as their characters that I can’t even begin to talk about how good they each were. Everyone. From Kieran Culkin’s hilarious portrayal of Wallace Wells, to Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s smooth performance as the mysterious and aloof Ramona Flowers, to Ellen Wong’s breakout performance as Knives Chau, literally every single person in this film was incredible.

The action in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World followed brought a level of frantic flashiness to the screen that I’d never seen before. Walls exploded, people’s powers flashed everywhere, things were effin’ crazy! I mean, every time someone was defeated, they would turn into coins. Oh man! So many more people would be fighting crime if the baddies actually turned into money! I know I would definitely kick my crime-fighting habits up a notch. Despite this film not being a cut-and-dry “action” movie, it kept up the pace and had fights strewn all throughout, each filled with bright and lively special effects. The sound effects were often hilariously ripped right from video games, and the music was so quirky, high-energy, and sweet that I already bought the soundtrack.

This film and The Expendables are my two favorite films of the year! Now anyone who doesn’t play video games or is older/is a poot really might not get Scott Pilgrim. But if you’re a gamer, young, or awesome go forth and enjoy the nerdy insanity!

Beware minor spoilers below!

I totally agree that “That’s it you cocky cock! You’ll pay for your crimes against humanity” is the best line of the movie but “I’m just a little bi-furious” is a close second.

  2. Rick Swift says:

I think the best defeat was #3, I mean defeating Superman – and watching the Vegan Police skip away high-fiving, just great writing, fun and funny. And, yes, if my vanquished foes turned to coins, I would vanquish more – but, with my luck it would be Canadian and you can’t use those damned things to get shit!

  3. Christopher says:

You know it’s a great movie when your first thought upon watching the closing credits is, “who can I take to this. I want to see it again.”

  4. MarQ says:

Fav quote – “”You just headbutted my boyfriend so hard he burst.” “You kicked my <3's ass, I guess now we're even"

Best defeat – tie between #4 Roxie (learned something there) & the twins (Rock beats Techno every time)

Best power – Aubry Plaza [bleeping] box – I do have that power as well

Two problems – 1) I didn't get a reason why Ramona was worth fighting for and 2) why didn't we see a smackdown with Scott's Ex Envy and Ramona? They set up a great mixed tag team match there and never came through.

I wish we could get a sequel but that is unlikely. I know I need to purchase it on dvd when it comes out to get more of the jokes that I missed while I was laughing.

I also made of list of things I learned from "Scott Pilgrim" on my tumblr account http://somewhereinvegas.tumblr.com/

Hey, I’m older than the intended audience for this movie (over 50) and I loved it.

Granted, afterward, my wife did get into a discussion as to whether this movie would be shown at the Jungian Society meeting (like they did with Blue Velvet) and the implications of Scott’s two animas…but I’d argue psychological nerdiness is still nerdiness.

Joseph Campbell might freak over the older mentor in the hero’s journey being a gay roommate…

Don’t both Knives Chau and Ramona Flowers deserve more credit for being strong, capable women that can hold their own in a fight? I think Knives grew more in the course of the movie than Scott did.

  6. There’s a subspace highway that I can travel 3 miles in 15 seconds. You don’t have those here? 🙂

I’ve seen it twice. My initial review stands. It can be found at http://moviereviewroundtable.com

I also believe as @JennPage does, if that matters to anyone….

While being directly in the target demographic for this movie, I absolutely hated it.
