This review is coming from someone (me) who has not seen any of the previous Star Trek shows or movies outside of J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek, so I will not be delving into how they compare to each other. I’ll only be looking at how this film stands on its own and as a sequel.
There’s no denying the greatness of the cast. Zachary Quinto delivers his lines with such perfectly Vulcan dryness you’d forget he is an actual person and not a robot. Pine also pulls off a great performance, combining the right combination of swagger, fun, and womanizing. The cast for Star Trek Into Darkness is probably one of it’s best features- so many recognizable, loveable, and awesome faces rolled into one film. Saying that, Saldana’s meager role is disappointing. Sure, she’s not the focus of the film, but her character seems to be there only to worry about Spock’s safety and get mad at him like “girlfriends” do.
The action is nicely spread throughout the film, keeping things moving without ever being overwhelming. It’s also has the right amount of humor- not so much that it detracts from the serious points in the film, but enough to keep you entertained. Into Darkness took some ideas, lines, and scenes from other Star Trek films and played off of them. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t.
If you don’t know the Star Trek history, Star Trek Into Darkness is a decent enough film to watch. It’s entertaining and funny, but it is one of those films where you don’t want to pull at the thread of one plot hole or else the whole sweater will unravel. Also, if you’re an avid Star Trek fan then there might be more to be upset about (I know some Trek fans who love it and others who weren’t impressed, so take that with a grain of salt).
Action Rating: 3 1/2 Photon Torpedoes, out of 5!
This is the Action Flick Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!
Quick question, if you have never seen Star Trek, how do you know Quinto delivers his lines with perfect Vulcan dryness? For that matter how do you know what a Vulcan is? The tiny bit of information that the previous trek-lite movie delved into hardly gave one a full understanding of Vulcan culture.
I see that we are in agreement on the proper way to enjoy Into Darkness.
