Priest (2011): Repent Least You Be Eaten by a Vampire!

Having to pay extra just to watch a film in 3D really lights my ass on fire! I hate it! Why should I have to pay 2 or more extra dollars for a pair of glasses that I have 50 pairs of at home? Even if the extra money is not for the glasses, even if it’s for the studios because it cost extra to film, or the theater that had to install special equipment to show 3D films, that’s just stupid. Then it really grinds my gears to see an ad on the screen telling me to save the economy by recycling my 3D glasses by giving them back to the theater that just charged me extra. Screw you! I’m keeping all of my glasses and making a glasses-castle out of them!

Priest can be seen in 2D or 3D. In a world where vampires and humans are eternally fighting for control, there is a group of highly skilled priests who were taken from their families to be specially trained to kill vampires. One Priest in particular (Paul Bettany) went against the church in order to go out into the world to save his niece (Lily Collins) who had been kidnapped by the vampires, mainly Black Hat (Karl Urban). Priestess (Maggie Q) and Hicks (Cam Gigandet) accompany Priest on his journey to save his niece.

If you couldn’t tell by the rant at the beginning of the article, I saw Priest in 3D only because the theater wasn’t showing it in 2D. Overall, I’m not impressed by 3D so I would say save your money if you can. I believe it was a post conversion, and while the 3D didn’t suck horribly, it didn’t add enough to warrant me paying extra for it. Hey, if you love 3D though, go for it.

Priest was a very average, run of the mill action adventure film. It got right to the point with this is the bad guy, this is the good guy, this why they’re fighting. It’s as predictable as the days of the week. This film is rated PG-13, so that should tell you about how average the action was. It just lacked anything really gruesome or amazing, which takes the punch out of an action movie. Oh, and Maggie Q only got to kick ass in approximately one scene. Overall, I enjoyed Priest (mostly because of Bettany); however, it did waste the talent of its stars, the sexy Maggie Q and the even sexier Paul Bettany, and for me, that is a huge sin. I guess Priest should ask itself for forgiveness.

Time Until Initial Action Starts: ~ 1 minute

Baddies: Vampires and Karl Urban!

Best Kill: Priest fights an uber vampire guardian dog type creature. The guardian jumps down from a ledge. Priest meets it in midair with two blade right down the gut. It falls to the ground and gets finished off with a shot to the head courtesy of Hicks.

Best Explosion: Priestess drives down some train tracks heading straight for a train. Her motorcycle heavy with explosives, she jumps off at the last second before impact. The collision ignites all the explosives causing the train to blow up car by car until it’s a massive ball of flaming wreckage.

Action Rating: 2 ½ Cross Shurikens, out of 5.

  1. Yeah, I was expecting a whole lot more out of the movie myself! I was expecting a lot more gross and complete ass kicking scenes. The Preistess I think had the best action scene ever when she completely ripped that familiar to pieces. That was the biggest highlight for me!

It was such a shame because the story was really, really good!! Maybe they’ll do a better reboot like they did with the Hulk….

I think it was the poster that caught my eye. Though, when I saw the trailer – I wasn’t quite sure what to think of it. Interesting about 3D vs 2D. I have not seen a film in 3D since Avatar. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one! 🙂
