Falling Skies Season 2 Episode 4 Review!

Episode four of TNT’s Falling Skies, “Young Bloods,” continues the trek to Charleston. Along the way, the 2nd Mass. stumble upon a group of children and teens trying to make it by themselves, and this group holds a big surprise for one particular member of the 2nd Mass.

This episode has been the most interesting so far, and yet, by the end of the episode, it still feels like nothing really got accomplished. It opened strong, with a lot of interesting things going on in the beginning, but by the end of the episode it didn’t feel like any of it amounted to anything. The points in between, however, did have a few moments of genuine tension to them, including we, the viewers, getting a front row viewing of someone getting harnessed!

Here’s what happens:

Matt is used as skitter bait, and when Tom finds out he freaks and embarrasses Matt by getting onto him in front of a large group of people.

Hal and Ben find a group of young outsiders and aim to steal their stuff until they realized they were just kids with no adults (Young Bloods), so they ended up inviting them back to the 2nd Mass. to give them supplies. Lo and behold, Captain Weaver’s daughter was in the group and they have a nice reunion.

Hal and some others take off to deliver the supplies to the Young Blood camp and find that everyone left behind was taken by the skitters to be harnessed. Oh no, never would have guessed that would happen. The 2nd Mass. grill Ben about what he remembers from when he was harnessed and prepare to rescue the children. One of the Young Bloods says he doesn’t take orders from anyone and leaves without the 2nd Mass, taking Weaver’s daughter (who yells at her father and makes him realize he’s been a bad daddy), Matt, and a few others with him.

They end up getting caught by the skitters and put on tables to be harnessed (oh no, didn’t see that coming, either). One kid gets harnessed and Matt is seconds from it when the 2nd Mass. comes in guns a-blazin’ and save him. Weaver saves his daughter and they make up.

Ben busts the tank that holds all the gross alien slug bugs that are used for harnessing and they blow them to pieces, though Weaver does end up injured by one of them.

They make it back to the camp with no problem. The compass from last episode comes full circle. It belonged to Weaver’s daughter all along, so he gives it back to her. She then leaves a note for dad saying that she’s not staying with him or going to Charleston. She explains the Young Bloods are her family and she sneaks out while Weaver is asleep. He cries like a wee little baby when he reads the note.

Hal notices Ben’s spikes glow in the harnessing camp, and Ben tells Hal not to tell on him, and to back up outta his bee’s wax!

Lourdes finds out her family’s town in Mexico was wiped out with no survivors.

Tom and Dr. Glass make out some more.

Likes:

  • Skitter head exploding
  • Oh snap! Tom was scolding Matt saying it’s not smart to be skitter bait, and Matt says yeah well walking onto an alien ship isn’t smart either. Schooled by a child!
  • The harnessing scene was great. Tense and gross, just the way I like it.

Dislikes:

  • Not a very big fight or struggle when they rescue the kids from the harnessing camp. In fact it was pretty freakin’ easy for the 2nd Mass. to infiltrate a camp that’s supposed to be full of skitters.
  • I thought the addition of new characters would mean more people to kill off down the road, but then they all left.
  • So what really got accomplished in this episode? Despite being a decent episode it felt like the writers were in too much of a rush to return everything to status quo.

Review: Syfy Original Film- Bigfoot!

Tomorrow Syfy airs its fourth and final film out of their most current batch of original crapsterpieces. What ‘roid raging animal will it star this time? It’s Bigfoot! June turned into a fantastic garbage-fest thanks to Syfy. Everyone knows Syfy films are really bad…but they’re hella fun to watch! The channel released a film each Saturday all month starting with Jersey Shore: Shark Attack, followed by Piranhaconda, then Arachnoquake, and now Bigfoot.

The plot is, as always, very simple. Bigfoot is about Bigfoot running around and stomping on people. Occasionally he takes a break from stomping to tear someone in half, but stomping is really all he knows how to do. The great thing about this film that raises it above Arachnoquake is that it stars ‘70s icons Danny Bonaduce (The Partridge Family) and Barry Williams (The Brady Bunch) as onscreen rivals, where one is trying to save Bigfoot and the other is trying to kill him. Alice Cooper also makes a guest appearance where he (spoiler alert) gets kicked to death by Bigfoot.

Bigfoot is another winner from Syfy, placing second on my list out of the four films. It’s full of campy fun raised to a level of ludicrousness with the terrible CGI added in – CG that’s bad even for Syfy, which is saying something. Not only does Bigfoot look silly, but when he runs, it’s like he’s running in place because he doesn’t move forward. I can’t explain the depths of the awfulness, so just make sure you tune in to Syfy Saturday, June 30, at 9/8c, then come back and let me know if that isn’t the worst CGI you’ve ever seen.

Coming Attraction: Dredd (2012)!

Coming out in September will be the newest adaptation of 2000 AD character Judge Dredd in the film titled Dredd. This film will have nothing to do with the 1995 film, Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone, and I’m mighty glad because that film was big piece of crap. Karl Urban will take on the role of Dredd this time and I think he and his chin will do a great job. The film also stars Lena Headey and Olivia Thirlby and is directed by Pete Travis. Dredd hits theaters September 21, 2012, in 3D. Check out the trailer!

Falling Skies Season 2 Episode 3 Review!

TNT’s Falling Skies continued last night with episode three, “Compass.” Properly named, this episode has a lot to do with a compass; not their most exciting episode, granted, but there was a bit of plot progression. The 2nd Mass. now has a new focus of moving to Charleston where they hope to find other survivors. They started season one with 300 people and at the end of this current episode they count up only 176. Their numbers are dwindling faster than a pile of sugar free cupcakes at a diabetes support group. Better find more people fast before things get ugly.

Here’s what happens:

In the first scene, we learn that Matt (Tom’s middle child) gets off killing skitters. He goes out with pal, Jimmy, to hunt and kill the aliens. Captain Weaver discusses going to the Catskills Mountains to bunker down and rest for the winter. He also may be hoping to get some dirty dancing lessons.

Pope and his team, known as the Berserkers, kidnap Tom and try to get rid of him before he hurts the group (they don’t trust him thanks to his alien abduction). Pope tells Tom to walk away and never return, but Ben comes to his daddy’s rescue (he owes him one after what happened last episode), and they take the Berserkers back for the Captain to decide their fate. He says he’s tired of fooling with them, but then others point out that they, too, feel like Tom could actually be a threat and liability. Tom volunteers to join the Berserkers to keep an eye on Pope, and so that if he does get possessed by alien tech or something the only ones he’ll hurt are the Berserker jerkasses.

Ben goes out again with Jimmy to hunt skitters. They come across three of them and immediately take down two, but then one gets the upper hand and throws Jimmy up against a tree, impaling him with a branch, before taking control of Ben via his spinal implant. After a rather lengthy staring contest, the skitter inexplicably lets Ben go and retreats. Ben takes Jimmy back to Dr. Glass where he ultimately dies from his injuries.

Everyone finds out that he has been hunting on his own and could have compromised their position so the Berserkers decide to check the perimeter, finding skitters and mechs gathering up their dead. Tom says not to shoot them, leading Pope to suspect him all the more.

Back at base, a strange airplane lands at their airport and a woman says she’s been looking for the Captain. She reports there being a unified government and close to 3000 survivors in Charleston. She’s out searching for survivors and heading all the way to Europe.

Tom tells the Berserkers they should be packing up to move out like the rest of the group, and Pope says otherwise. The lip from Pope, and seeing Jimmy’s compass hanging around his neck send Tom into a rage and the two have a throwdown which ends with Tom as the victor. Pope tattles to the Captain, expecting Tom to be reprimanded, but the Captain gives no craps and tells Pope he’s free to leave anytime, which he does, but only after guilting one of the Berserkers into coming with him.

After Jimmy’s funeral, Ben gives Jimmy’s compass to the Captain before breaking down in tears. The Captain realizes they have to keep fighting or else the others would have died in vain, and ultimately opts to move the group to Charleston.

In the end we see Ben at Jimmy’s grave where he’s spotted and mind controlled by the red-eyed skitter, and like before Red Eye leaves without doing anything. You know, if a skitter is going to gaze into my eyes like that, he’d better make it worth my while and not just leave without doing something.

Oh, and somewhere along the way Tom and Dr. Glass make out on a bus.

Likes:

  • Dr. Glass and Tom kissing. It’s been more than a season, time to get the show on the road.
  • Pope leaving. I’m sure he’ll be back to cause problems later.
  • Actual plot progression. There wasn’t a lot, but more than the premiere.
  • I like the focus not being all about Tom this episode. Ben got a lot of screen time this go around.
  • The preview for next week’s episode looks really good!

Dislikes:

  • As much as I like the plot progression, it was rather empty of action. There can be a healthy balance, people!
  • Ben’s surprisingly squeaky crying at the end.
  • Jimmy’s oddly massive funeral. Did the six people who got gunned down in last episode’s firefight get such a sendoff? Didn’t think so.

What else did you like or not like about this week’s episode?
