The Walking Dead 3-5: Weirdbury, Population Andrea

Another great episode of The Walking Dead aired last night on AMC. “Say the Word” wasn’t quite as intense as the previous episode (I don’t think anything can top “Killer Within”), but it was still intriguing and revealed a little bit more of the weirdness that’s going on in Woodbury.

But first, let’s check in with Dale.

I got him. Yep, I finally got him! That hat-thieving raccoon thinks he’s so dang smart, but tell me, Action Chick, what’ll he think about my custom raccoon trap?

She’s a beauty, isn’t she? Custom-made raccoon trap! It’s not gonna harm the little feller, but, sure as pudding, it’s gonna get my dang hats back!

Got him for sure, this time!

(Unintelligible raccoon noises)

Not again! COME BACK HERE WITH MY HAT!

(Unintelligible raccoon noises)

Thanks for the update, Dale. Now, onward, to the recap!

Here’s what happened:

 In Woodbury:

The Governor starts the show off strong by brushing a little girl’s hair- a little ZOMBIE girl! Turns out the undead tyke’s name is Annie, and it’s his daughter named Annie. As he’s corraling little Annie into her straight jacket, he sees Michonne outside the window watching his house. Unstoppable force (Michonne) meet unmovable object (The Governor). The boxing gloves are on and I’m betting on Big M!

While the whole town is preparing for a celebration, Michonne sneaks into The Governor’s house to get her sword back. While there, she finds a notebook with female names written in it, and then The Governor returns before she can find out more, so she slips out the window. In The Governor’s backyard she finds a pen full of zombies, and, being the good Samaritan she is, she lets them loose and obliterates them a la The Bride. The Governor somehow notices that all of his walkers are lying around in pieces so he brings Michonne in for a talk and takes her sword. He tells her that she’s got the wrong idea about him, and that he’s trying to protect his people, and offers her a job with the research team. She flips her sword out of his hands and holds the blade to his throat before walking away. Nobody tells Michonne what to do.

So how does the great Governor respond? He runs and tattles on Michonne to Andrea. The girls have a heart-to-heart steps away from the open gate, with Andrea pleading with Michonne to stay, but ultimately, Big M hits the road, leaving Team Michandrea split up… for now.

Merle, the Governor’s nerdy doctor pal, and a few ruffians go out and catch zombies in a pit as part of their “research,” and pull their teeth out. Later, The Governor takes Andrea to the “party” which involves Merle and another no name dude fighting in the middle of a “ring” surrounded by zombies. They each try to stay away from the walkers/push the opponent into them, but, like all good wrestling, the danger is all staged, seeing as how the walkers don’t have any teeth. Andrea tells Guv what they’re doing is sick; Guv tells her to deal with it.

At the prison:

Daryl and Maggie go off on his motorcycle to search for baby supplies and formula. They find some baby stuff and feed Lori’s squawking offspring. After a brief discussion on what to name the baby, Daryl, who is inexplicably holding her, votes on naming her “Little Ass-kicker.”

Meanwhile, a distraught and utterly destroyed Rick grabs an axe and goes Kratos-style on the zombies remaining inside the prison. Glen digs three graves then goes inside to find Rick, blood-spattered and staring at a wall. Glen tries to bring him back to Earth, Red Rick’s not having it, and chokes his little buddy before wandering off deeper into the prison finding the birth place of his beautiful baby girl. Then, things get messed up. While looking for Lori’s body, he finds that a random walker has wandered in and eaten her entire body. Ahhh! What!? Did the show’s writers hate Lori as much as we did? I mean, for the love of Riggs and Murtagh, there was nothing left of the poor girl… NOTHING! The zombie, who is resting after such a big meal, doesn’t go after Red Rick. Red Rick, however, carves into its protruding gut like a wild badger.

Looks like they won’t need Lori’s grave after all… although, while that scene was gross, once logic comes into play you may wonder “Wait, where the hell were Lori’s bones? There’s no way that walker ate them, too.”

Lastly, we see Daryl paying his respect at the triple grave site. What did they even bury there? There was hardly anything left of T-dog, there was nothing left of Lori, and Carol is still missing. So brutal!

Back to Red Rick, he has a good old fashioned sit-down against a wall, still dazed, and hears a phone ringing. A phone? Yeah, a phone. Rick answers with a raspy “Hello?” and the episode fades to black.

Likes:

  • Michonne’s sword practice on the zombie horde.
  • M’s zombie curb stomp
  • Daryl’s greeting to a possum: “Hello, dinner.”
  • Michonne having enough sense to get the hell out of Woodbury.
  • Technically, it never showed Carol’s body which means she’s not dead…yet.
  • The phone. Who the hell is it!?

This is the Action Flick Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!

The Walking Dead 3-4: Crap Just Got Real!

SHIT. JUST. GOT. REAL.

Major spoilers in this recap!

Holy poop-sicles AMC’s The Walking Dead is pulling out all the stops and has brought the gold this entire season, but especially in tonight’s episode, “Killer Within.” This was the most brutal and emotional episode they’ve ever had…I’m still in shock. I just stared at the blank television screen after the episode was over. Holy crap balls. If you aren’t watching this show you need to reevaluate your priorities and get caught up ASAP. This episode is some of the best television I’ve seen.

But, before we get to the recap, let’s check in with Dale.

Dale!

Lori! Good to see you, missy! How’ve you been?

Not great, obviously, seeing as how I’m here with you, and we’re both dea-

Don’t you say it! The only person who’s dead around here is that hat-thieving raccoon once I get my hands on him!

(Unintelligible raccoon noises)

Doggone it, don’t wave at me! AND COME BACK HERE WITH MY HAT!

Dale, man, take a chill pill.

I’m sorry, son, do I know you?

It’s me, Dale. Theodore? Theodore Douglas? You and I spent a year running around in the same group of survivors.

No, I only remember one Africa-American gent and his name was T-Dog. He didn’t talk much.

That’s me! I’m T-Dog!

Nope, don’t think so, son, but I’m pleased to make your acquaintance.

(Unintelligible raccoon noises)

There he is! Lori, Theodore, help me nab that coon!

Excuse me?

Thanks, Dale! Now onwards, to the recap!

Here’s what happens…if you think you can handle it:
The episode opens with a hand reaching down to grab a gas tank and a gutted deer carcass. This unseen person cuts the lock off the back gate to the prison and leaves the carcass there to attract zombies.
The two inmates (who I call Cool Guy and Mustache) who didn’t get Rick-rolled in the previoius episode plea to join the group, and Rick tells them to get lost. Hershel gets some crutches and walks outside. Everything’s all happy, everyone’s outside smiling, enjoying the beautiful sunshine having a moment when a heard of walkers show up INSIDE the gates right behind part of the group. Rick, Daryl, and Glen are off in the distance gathering wood and haul ass to help the rest. Everyone gets split up: T-Dog and Carol are together, Maggie, Carl, and Lori head into the prison, Hershel and Beth lock themselves in a cage outside the prison.

During the run, T-Dog closes the back gate, ensuring the safety of the group, and gets bitten on the shoulder. Nooooo! The moment good ol’ T was by himself closing the gate against a bunch of zombies I knew he’d get bitten. So sad. Then infected T and Carol head into the prison.
The sirens go off, attracting more walkers and Rick figures out that someone set all this up. Cool Guy, Mustache, Rick, Daryl, and Glenn run into the prison looking to shut down the generator to silence the sirens. They find it, along with the person behind this zombie attack- the prisoner Rick ditched to get eaten by walkers in the second episode? Turns out the Escapee is a little craftier than anyone expected, because he survived and is on a mission to take back the prison. Rick loses his gun while fighting the Escapee. Cool Guy gets the gun and shoots the Escapee, then hands the gun over to Rick. They turn off the generators that were powering the sirens and go to look for the others.

Meanwhile, T-Dog sacrifices himself by rushing a couple of zombies to help Carol get through a door to escape. T-Dog is torn into, ruthlessly, brutally, and without mercy. Man, he went out like a boss. RIP young Theodore Douglas. Just when he was starting to open up and get some nice lines is when he heads off to the great T-Doghouse in the sky.

Just when you think things can’t get any worse, Lori goes into labor right as a herd of zombies charge her, Carl, and Maggie. They find a room to hide in and prepare to deliver a baby. If you’re going into labor with a gun in your hand and zombies pounding on the door, that probably wins the award for “Worst Time to Go Into Labor!” Lori starts pushing, but isn’t fully dilated so they can’t get the baby out. Lori then busts out a set of crazy eyes and tells Maggie to cut her the frak open. After a lot of arguing, they all realize that there’s no other choice if they want to save the baby. Lori says goodbye to Carl and then gives the nod.

Maggie cuts her open and pulls out the healthy, gunky baby. Lori, on the other hand, doesn’t stay so healthy, and joins T-Dog in the T-Doghouse in the sky. As Carl and Maggie start to leave, Carl realizes that Lori will turn and they can’t just leave her like that. His hardened ass walks over to his mother and puts a bullet in her brain…leaving the whole world’s mouth agape and speechless.

All of this happens in a horrifying blur, and I was still reeling from T-Dog’s death when Lori’s all “Cut me.” Just when I actually started to like Lori a little bit, she goes and sacrifices herself for her baby. At least that’s a better death than she gets in the comics.
Oh boy. Everyone meets outside and count their losses. Carol is nowhere to be found, but there isn’t a body so she could still be alive. Rick collapses in grief over Lori and Carl just stares into oblivion, with granite, teary eyes.

In Woodbury:
Michone gives everyone the evil eye and finds bullet holes and blood on the National Guard vehicles that were brought in last episode. She’s no fool and immediately suspects The Governor is no good, so she and Andrea plan their departure.
Andrea gives Merle a map to where the farm was that she last saw Daryl. Merle asks The Governor if he can go looking for his brother, and The Governor tries to placate him by telling him that they’ll go once there’s more concrete evidence, which does not calm the elder Dixon brother. The Governor shmoozes with Andrea and says his name is Phillip, convincing Andrea that he’s a good guy, so she tells Michone to stay in Woodbury for a few more days.

Likes:
• Maggie and Glen getting their freak on in a guard tower.
• Daryl’s jumping knife stab to a zombie. Ezio Auditore would be proud of that assassin move!
• Lori going into labor while a herd of zombies come around the corner.

RIP:
Theodore Douglas: Theodore “T-Dog” Douglas was something of an enigma; I feel like there was a whole backstory to him that we only got glimpses of. Still, he was a morally strong, brawny pile of zombie ass-kicking who went out keeping his friends safe, which is a better end than most people get on this show.
Lori Grimes: We loved to hate you for the first two seasons, and then came to feel sorry for you and like you right at the end.

Casting News for Michael Bay’s New Action Drama: Jessica Parker Kennedy Joins Cast of Black Sails

What do a French prostitute, fabled buccaneer Captain Flint and Cape Town, South Africa have in common? They are all elements of Michael Bay’s new series, “Black Sails.” The eight-episode series is slated for 2014 and Starz network (which most recently popularized the historical drama “Spartacus”) has inked the deal.

This is the story before Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island.” It’s the prequel of 20 years prior to the novel which was set in the mid-18th century. There is action, adventure, debauchery, humor and emotion, none of which are new concepts to executive producer Michael Bay, whose long list of film credits include “The Rock,” “Armageddon,” “Pearl Harbor” and “The Island.” All of these Blockbuster films have the qualities that “Black Sails” will need – big sets, explosions, six pounders (cannons), wenches, fortune tellers, gypsies, knaves and a bunch of scallywags loaded to the gunwalls (drunkards).

The French Prostitute

Every good pirate drama needs a hot young wench and a promiscuous strumpet (that’s pirate for prostitute). Enter stage left, Jessica Parker Kennedy. The Canadian actress co-stared in “The Secret Circle” and has just joined the cast of the CW’s teenage drama “90210.” Her resume includes appearances on “Smallville” and “Brothers & Sisters.” Deadline.com reports Kennedy’s character name is Max, a French prostitute with beauty and swagger.

Captain Flint

The adventures of Captain Flint will be highlighted in “Black Sails” as the buccaneer leads a crew of pirates to New Providence Island, where thieves and scoundrels will try to stop them from carrying on with their journey to find treasures. The classic novel refers to a hated, blood-thristy Captain Flint, but he never actually appears in the book.

British actor, Toby Stephens will take the helm as Captain Flint. This marks Stephens debut major-American role, although he has been acting for over 20 years. He has a lot of classical acting experience as he’s played numerous Shakespeare roles like Othello, Duke Orsino in “Twelfth Night” and Demetrius in “Midsummer Night’s Dream.” He played Gustav Graves in “Die Another Day” and most recently starred in the BBC dramedy, “Vexed.”

Cape Town, South Africa

According to deadline.com, pre-production has begun and Cape Town, South Africa is the filming destination for “Black Sails.” Seems appropriate enough for such a grand tale of sailing the rough seas. And there is lots of sea in South Africa. You will find the director, Neil Marshall, at Cape Town Studios preparing for this epic journey. Most recently, Marshall directed an episode of “Game of Thrones” and was writer/director for 2005’s “The Descent” and 2008’s “Doomsday.”

The show was created by Jon Steinberg (“Jericho”) and Platinum Dunes is in charge of production. Director Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (Platinum Dunes) will be joined by Robert Levine (“Touch”) as executive producers. According to Hollywood Reporter, it is Bay’s maiden voyage into the world of television series, although he is executive producer of a pilot that will air on TNT, “The Last Ship.”

You can expect ships, parrots, treasure maps and gold hunts. Pillages, piracy, plunder and plank walking. Mutiny, grog, a good chase and a whole lotta “Arrr!”
