New Clips for Syfy’s Defiance and Deep South Paranormal

syfy

If you love watching shows about the paranormal and people in the south, and don’t have HBO,  you can now get your filling of both with Syfy’s new original show, Deep South Paranormal. It’s a little bit country, and a little bit scary. Watch the trailer and set your DVRs for the premiere Wednesday, April 10 at 10/9c.

Another new Syfy show that I’m definitely excited about is Defiance. It depicts a world where humans and aliens are trying to figure out how to live together peacefully, and at the heart of the show are two sisters played by Julie Benz and Mia Kirshner. Here is a “Making of” clip focused on the sisters. Defiance premieres Monday, April 15 at 9/8c.

Being Human 3-10: Hungry Hungry Stevie

Being Human - Season 3

Sally and Josh have a heated discussion whilst burying a zombie body.

If you’re hoping for things to start looking better for the Being Human paranormal trio, think again. Aidan may be cured of his vampire flu, but “For Those About to Rot” only finds him and the rest of our sexy trio diving further into trouble. There are only three episodes left of this awesome season so anything can happen!

After a bit of teasing from Sally, Aidan realizes he’s sexually frustrated, and gives his relationship with Kat a try. After a rather awkward date, these two history nerds end up doing it anyways. Everything seems hunky-dory until we see Aidan wake up in an alley, all woozy and unsure of how he got there. Hidden behind some alley garbage is Kat’s ex-boyfriend’s body— somehow the poor bugger’s been drained of all his blood. Uh-oh, Aidan. He seems unknowingly be having some control issues. Will Kat find out? Will she dig dating a vampire? Or will she have the sense to run the other way? A lot of time was eaten up by flashbacks to Aidan’s ridiculous pilgrim-hair-time and showed how he was barely able to have a child pre-vampirism.

Sally gets a phone call from Zoe, and rushes over to find that she killed Nick when he attacked/tried to chow down on her. Whew! Sorry, Nick, but between you and Zoe, I’d rather she survived. She’s a smart, interesting character and deserves better than to be eaten by a zombie. Zoe sends Sally packing, telling her to stay away from her after Nick’s ghost warns her about the hunger. But then Nick gets his door and all seems to be okay. Then Sally decides to visit Stevie’s parents house and finds that Stevie beat her to it. He visited his folks, who died because of the black hoodoo that reanimated him, and ate their bodies, as well as the poor mailman. He begs to be put out of his misery before he eats someone else, so Josh steps up to the plate and slays the kid off-screen, lamenting that “this is who he is now.” Soulful-eyed Josh has been forced to do a lot of crazy stuff over the past few years, but it’s all becoming a normal part of his day: killed a zombie, check. Buried the body of another zombie, check. Walked in on vampires trying to eat a werewolf, check check (we’ll get to that in a second).

Pilgrim Aidan doesn’t dig going to church.

No one in the show pointed out that when Stevie’s ghost appeared, Josh couldn’t see him! Does this mean he won’t turn into a werewolf after all? Maybe he’s immune to it, seeing as how he’s already been there and done that. Stevie’s door appears and as he’s walking through it Sally notices it’s the very same door that appeared for Nick. Ghost rule #482: every ghosts door is different. Sally smells something fishy, but realizes it just in time to be too late— Stevie’s already through the door. Now that’s just one more mystery for the trio to solve while trying to find a way to keep Sally alive without eating human flesh. I have a bad feeling about Stevie and Nick (Hey! Stevie Nicks! Like the singer!) I’m afraid those two will end up dust in Witchy-poo’s kitchen, just like that other poor schmuck Sally inadvertently killed at the beginning of the season.

Last episode Aidan decided to stand up to the werewolves by telling the vampires about the cure for the vamp flu, despite Josh and Nora encouraging him to keep it to himself. A group of vampires attack Petey, the hippie werewolf Josh and Nora befriended last episode. Josh tries to stop them, but he just gets knocked out while the vamps drink his poor friend’s blood. Next episode will probably have a very upset Josh and Nora demanding answers from Aidan as to why their friends are being treated like Capri Suns.

The Walking Dead 3-14: Andrea Raaan, She Ran So Far Awaaaay

TWD_GP_314_1109_0033

Andrea (Laurie Holden) finally makes a decision.

This week on The Walking Dead, Andrea tries to redeem herself, but it’s a little too late, and instead finds herself The Govenor’s prey, which, conveniently enough, happens to be the name of the episode. WD fans wishing for Andrea’s death might just get it, or at the very least, they’ll get to see some very nasty things happen to her.

But before we get any further, let’s check in with Dale.

The Dale Face

Action Chick, what in the world is this “Gum-gum style” I keep hearing so much about? Does it have anything to do with Bazooka Joe bubble gum? Now there’s a gum I haven’t had in years. As a kid, I used to buy big piles of ’em and me and my friends would have a gum-off to see who could chew the most pieces at once. It’d always end when Fat Petey complained about being light-headed. That kid was a whiner, with a capitol E for weiner.

Thanks, Dale. Now onward, to the recap!

The Governor readies his torture room for Michonne, which is finally the spark Milton needed to light a flame under his butt and say enough is enough. He spills the beans to Andrea so she can warn Rick’s Rebels of The Gov’s un-gentlemanly plans for them, and she takes off to the prison. She has finally done something to start making up for her whole season’s worth of stupidity— but it was a day late and about a million dollars too short. Rather than sending his minions to do his dirty work, The Gov goes after her personally. There’s a long stretch of time with Andrea on foot and The Gov pursuing her in the luxury of a truck. After a fairly intense stand-off in an abandoned warehouse, Andrea unleashes a whole buttload of walkers on The Gov and escapes. Juuuuust as she reaches the prison, he shows up, bloody, tired, and crazy, and tackles her to the ground. He then takes her back to his honeymoon shack of torture and tells everyone he couldn’t find her. I’m am soooooooooo soooooo sooooo x 1000 ready to see this mofo die a horrible death. You know you’ve created a fantastic villain when your audience is eager to see him get blasted to meaty bits.

TWD_GP_314_1109_0131

Governor Philip (David Morissey) has his eye on you.

The entirety of “Prey” was focused on Andrea’s run to the prison, which makes it doubly irritating to see that goal not get accomplished right at the last second. She was within Rick’s sight! Gawh!

While Andrea ran for an extremly long time in boots that definitely didn’t look built for running, Tyreese and Sasha seemed like they were going to wise up and leave Woodbury, but alas they succumbed to the lies flowing freely out of The Gov’s mouth. Does he have beer flavored nipples or something? People are so willing to believe this dude I’m beginning to think he’s freaking magic.

Milton earned about 999 bonus points this episode for finally being cool. He tells Andrea to warn Rick’s Rebels, then he goes and torches the bunch of walkers The Gov planned to use as a mini-WMD, an act which doesn’t go unnoticed by our dear Govenator. Now you can really hear the clock ticking down the remaining seconds of mousey Milton’s life— better make them count, nerd!

Likes:

  • Andrea finally realizing that The Gov is a bad, bad man.
  • Andrea leaving to warn Rick’s Rebels.
  • Andrea letting the zombies loose on The Gov.
  • Milton turning on The Gov.
  • The fights with all the zombies, especially The Gov putting a shovel through one of their heads.
  • Milton growing a pair and secretly turning against his old buddy, Philip.

Dislikes:

  • The Governor found Andrea way too easily. What, does she have a freaking tracking device on her?
  • Tyreese being slow to figure out The Governor’s rampant evilness.
  • The honeymoon torture room and Andrea being the first honeymooner. Even though she’s been frustratingly stupid this season, I don’t want to see anyone tortured except The Gov himself.
  • No Daryl

American Mary- Stay Away From Me-hee!

american-mary

Horror film American Mary follows a med student, Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle) as she explores interesting… and often unethical options to make money. Med school has her completely broke, and this girl’s got bills to pay, so she starts practicing surgeries a bit sooner than she expected. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on in the trailer, but it looks freaky, and could potentially have some cerebral horror to it,  so I’m interested. It was written by the Soska Sisters, Jen and Sylvia, who also wrote the indie hit Dead Hooker in a Trunk and will hit theaters according to iTunes, May 31, 2013.

K-11 Film Review: What the What!?!

K11TwitterLogo

What do you get when you combine transsexuals, homosexuals, and one rapist prison guard? The new film directed by Jules Stewart (Kristen Stewart’s mother), K-11, that’s what. In Stewart’s directorial debut we have a record producer, Raymond Saxx Jr ( Goran Visnjic), who finds himself in jail for murder after a long night of partying. This ain’t no regular section of jail, though. He’s put in the section for homosexuals/transsexuals even though he’s neither. He’s also innocent of the murder charges he’s been dealt, of course, but someone is out to get him for sure. He has to think of a plan to clear his name and get out before the prison guard has his way with him.

exclusive-image-from-jules-stewart-s-k-11-98747-03-1000-100

K-11 is one of the most bizarre films I’ve ever seen. It falls under the drama category, but it’s so hard to tell what the purpose of the film is supposed to be. It definitely sticks with you, though. Plus, recognizable actors such as Jason Mewes, Tommy “Tiny” Lister, Kate del Castillo, and Portia Doubleday take on roles in this prison flick. It’s all about drugs, rape, and the inmates trying to get justice against one very bad prison guard. I can’t say it’s a great film- bouncing all over the place between super serious, not so fun scenes and then some comedic scenes, but it’s definitely different. It’s released today, check out the trailer and see if this is your cup of tea.

SXSW 2013: Evil Dead (2013): Dark, Dead, and Disgusting

img_189297_evil-dead-2013-red-band-trailer-2-hd

Here we have another remake. While Evil Dead is one of the best remakes out there, it’s still a remake- an unoriginal idea aping an earlier work brimming with originality. Stop me if you’ve heard this plot before: “Five friends stay at a cabin in the woods and something evil picks them off one by one.” This particular trope is like a diaper- it wasn’t ever meant to be reused over and over. So why is Hollywood still making audiences wear the same poopy diaper? Stop it!

Remake culture aside, Evil Dead is a very well done, gory horror flick. It manages to keep the spirit of the original alive while still varying things up enough to be interesting. Director Fede Alvarez made sure to use practical effects liberally, which keeps the gore looking amazingly disgusting. Most of the characters end up covered in blood at some point, or otherwise impaled/dismembered/disfigured, and it all looks deliciously painful. While there’s plenty of gore, your mileage may vary as to whether you consider it gorier than the original. If you recall, the original Evil Dead got an X rating in some parts of the world, and star Bruce Campbell spent a majority of his time being doused in blood or goop of some kind.

5-best-evil-dead-redband-trailer-2

To (slightly) vary the basic storyline about five good-looking people going to a cabin in the woods, the filmmakers added in a little plotline about the excursion not being for fun, but to help Mia (Jane Levy) break her drug addiction. So, when they don’t bolt from the cabin at the first sign of trouble, or when Mia talks about seeing things and no-one believes her, it makes sense. This story hook provides more depth to Mia and her brother, David, and feels very organic. The remaining three characters didn’t fall directly into the typical stereotypes- okay, maybe one of them did. But for the other two girls to fit into stereotypes would have required they have personalities. Seeing as they don’t, you’re better off just remembering them as Body Bag 1 and Body Bag 2. The last member of this quintet is the Scholar. This guy is supposed to be the smart one, and yet he opens a book bound in a bag and barbed wire, reads a passage with repeated warnings not to read said passage aloud, and, since the cursed phrase is marked out, he goes to the trouble of making a charcoal impression of the writing just to find out what it is. Let’s not forget that he finds this book in the basement where there’s twenty or so dead animals hanging from the ceiling. Why the HELL would he read that?

Once Evil Dead gets going, it keeps up the full speed pace for the entire film. While there weren’t many jump scares, there are, instead, a lot of raw and unsettling scenes. With the new additions and slight twists on expectations, Evil Dead can easily be classified as a great remake. Despite a few problems, it’s a fun watch… but then again, so is the original.

Best Kill: Mia fights the demon that’s responsible for all the chaos and pulls out the Evil Dead series’ signature weapon- a chainsaw. As the demon crawls towards her, Mia meets her half way with a hearty “Feast on this, motherfucker” and jams the chainsaw in the demon’s face, refusing to stop thing’s been split in half. Oh yeah!

Action Rating: 3 ½ Deadites, out of 5.

Action Chick Presents “2012 Action Academy Awards:” Voting Now Open!

Print

Every year films are assessed, and if found worthy enough, nominated for the Academy Awards. Now, for whatever reason, my beloved Action movies are rarely nominated for an Oscar, so I’ve decided to hold my own Action Academy Awards to recognize and celebrate the hard work that goes into making an action movie.

Action roles not only take a lot of brain power, but also a lot of physical power. Actors are put to the test in every scene, as well as the stunt men/women, safety crew, director, etc. Every single person has to be on cue because when something goes wrong in an action movie, there’s more of a chance of someone getting hurt.

I’ve set up a survey that is now open to the public, so that you, the fans, can decide who wins. The awards are for new action films released in 2012. There are only five categories to start with this first year, so it won’t take long to give your input. The categories are as follows: Best Hero, Best Heroine, Best Villain, Best Stunt Work, Best Action Movie of 2012.

There’s no requirement to sign-up or create an account, so take the survey and support your favorite action movies! The winners will be announced March 27.
