Review: Star Trek Into Mediocrity

star_trek_into_darkness_2013-wide

This review is coming from someone (me) who has not seen any of the previous Star Trek shows or movies outside of J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek, so I will not be delving into how they compare to each other. I’ll only be looking at how this film stands on its own and as a sequel.

There’s no denying the greatness of the cast. Zachary Quinto delivers his lines with such perfectly Vulcan dryness you’d forget he is an actual person and not a robot. Pine also pulls off a great performance, combining the right combination of swagger, fun, and womanizing. The cast for Star Trek Into Darkness is probably one of it’s best features- so many recognizable, loveable, and awesome faces rolled into one film. Saying that, Saldana’s meager role is disappointing. Sure, she’s not the focus of the film, but her character seems to be there only to worry about Spock’s safety and get mad at him like “girlfriends” do.

The action is nicely spread throughout the film, keeping things moving without ever being overwhelming. It’s also has the right amount of humor- not so much that it detracts from the serious points in the film, but enough to keep you entertained. Into Darkness took some ideas, lines, and scenes from other Star Trek films and played off of them. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t.

If you don’t know the Star Trek history, Star Trek Into Darkness is a decent enough film to watch. It’s entertaining and funny, but it is one of those films where you don’t want to pull at the thread of one plot hole or else the whole sweater will unravel. Also, if you’re an avid Star Trek fan then there might be more to be upset about (I know some Trek fans who love it and others who weren’t impressed, so take that with a grain of salt).

Action Rating: 3 1/2 Photon Torpedoes, out of 5!

Have a Saldan-athon!

AFC Classic: The Losers Neither Wins Nor Loses

With Star Trek Into Darkness out this weekend, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier coming soon, it seemed appropriate to go back and check out a work featuring two stars of those films: Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans. Here’s my classic review of The Losers!

Most people have been called a loser once or twice in their lifetime. Well folks, The Losers make that insult more of a compliment, because these “losers” are skilled, smart individuals, and kick a lot of ass!

Here’s a rundown of what The Losers is about: Five specially trained men are sent to Bolivia on a mission: the leader, Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and his compatriots Cougar (Oscar Jaenada), Pooch (Columbus Short), Jensen (Chris Evans), and Roque (Idris Elba). The mission turns out to be a set up by the baddie Max (Jason Patric) and ends with the Losers appearing dead to the world. The guys end up stuck in Bolivia until Aisha (Zoe Saldana) finds them and helps get them back into America if they promise to help her get Max.

The Losers is a perfectly acceptable, completely average action film. The plot was neither exciting enough to make you wet your pants, nor was it so boring you would rather be giving yourself an enema than watching the film. Nope, it was right in the middle of mildly entertaining but nothing fantastic.

The actors did a great job delivering their mediocre lines. I like Chris Evans and he definitely added some classic Evans charm to his character. Zoe Saldana did a great job being a bad ass femme fatale. She’s hot, she’s dangerous, and she can make a grown man squeal. Score one for the ladies! Another bonus for this film is that it’s five buff dudes and a hot girl kicking butt. The action itself was well paced and there was a lot of it, though there’s not much that’s especially tense or crazy about it. It’s just plain old fashioned action.

I enjoyed this film. It’s nothing to rush out and run over some old lady with a walker just to see the film. But it definitely could be a good one to catch if you’re looking for a movie to watch and you’ve already seen Kick Ass.

Beware Spoilers Below!

Time Until Action Starts: ~ 4 ½ minutes.

Baddies: Max!

Best Line: Nothing stood out as a particularly great line. There is a line that I like a lot with my own finishing touches. Clay is talking about Max and says, “Man’s got a voice right? If a man’s got a voice, he’s got a throat. If man’s got a throat, then…” Here Clay, let me help you finish that sentence. “If man’s got a throat, then it can be ripped out with my bare hands!” Yay! So much better, don’t ya think?

Best Kill: One of the baddies, Wade (Holt McCallany), is riding a motorcycle towards Clay. Behind Clay, there is a jet with more baddies in it going full throttle trying to run over Clay as well. Clay is just standing there, unarmed, staring at all the baddies coming at him. He ain’t scared. Know why? Because he knows his friend has his back. Off in the distance is Cougar, the most excellent sniper. He shoots the motorcycle’s gas tank and blows it up. That propels Wade up, over Clay, and into the engine of the jet, destroying the engine and splattering Wade real good. That’s the best kill, however, that sequence isn’t over yet. The motorcycle is propelled into the jet’s windshield causing a huge explosion and Clay walks away without a scratch on him.

Best Explosion: Picture it! A helicopter takes off with 25 kids inside. 25 kids that the “Losers” just rescued and saved from being blown up. Aww, happy story with a happy ending…then you see a missile. Oh yes they did! A baddie freakin’ blew up the helicopter full of kids! It was kind of shocking even though I was thinking it was be hilarious if they blew up that helicopter. Well, they did. It was a big explosion with a little bit of shock value. Perfect!

Action Rating: 3½ Chihuahua Bobble Heads, out of 5

Gravity Teaser Trailer

gravity-movie-poster

How long could a person actually survive floating freely in space? We’ll get Hollywood’s answer with the upcoming film Gravity. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star as astronauts who experience an unfortunate run-in with some debris that leaves them floating in space sans spaceship. I bet that’d feel weird as balls! The teaser trailer did a good job at inducing a mild panic attack watching the two astronauts try to grab onto something before becoming lost  in space. Join their struggle to return to Earth before time runs out on October 4, 2013.

Jason Statham’s Hummingb-I Mean Redemption- Preview

RED_1sht_7_WEB_1

You may know Jason Statham’s newest film by the working title Hummingbird (as it’s still listed on IMDB) instead of Redemption, but, according to the poster and trailer, it seems the flick is getting a name makeover. Statham plays an ex-Special Forces soldier, Joey, who returns from a tour in Afghanistan. Struggling to reintegrate into normal society, he soon finds himself tangled up in London’s criminal underworld leading to some bad things. Those bad things lead to Joey looking for REDEMPTION! I think the name change was appropriate for this film, though I’m curious as to why it was originally titled Hummingbird. Overall it looks like another grim and gritty Statham flick, hopefully with plenty of the requisite Statham kicking of the asses. Redemption, presented by Roadside Attractions, rolls into theaters June 28, 2013.

12 Reasons Iron Man 3 is Awesome

Iron-Man-3

Bottom line: Iron Man 3 is awesome. I know it, you know it, and the box office knows it. Rather than break down its pros and cons like every other reviewer, I thought I’d take the high road and talk about the awesome little details that have lead to it having the second most successful opening weekend of all movie history… right behind The Avengers, naturally.

  1. Robert Downey, Jr. is always awesome and put on a fantastic performance balancing snarky, scared, and heroic at the same time.
  2. Sweet multiple Iron Man suits with different skills.
  3. Ben Kingsley’s performance as The Mandarin is so very nuanced, and so very scary.
  4. The post-credit gag.
  5. Tony Stark and Rhodes’ buddy cop vibe, adding humor and comradery in all the right places.
  6. Pepper gets the last word. You have to see the movie to understand, but I loved her participation in the end fight sequence.
  7. The Air Force One sequence.
  8. The story breaks down Tony Stark and builds him up again, in a good way.
  9. The movie is legitimately funny, with good writing and excellent delivery from the cast.
  10. The story is both personal and epic, and makes more sense than 90% of the other blockbuster flicks’ plots.
  11. Organic references to the events of The Avengers– You know what? An alien invasion would be a pretty damn big deal so of course people would refer back to it.
  12. The action hits all the right spots of being frequent, big, and purposeful.

Action Rating: 4 Arc Reactors, out of 5!

Iron Man 3 ranks better than the second film in the series. It’s worth the money to see it in theaters, so do it. Then you can add to the list of awesomeness in the comments below.

Warehouse 13 Showrunner Talks Guests Stars and New Time Slot

warehouse13

Warehouse 13season 4.5 officially premieres tonight at 10/9c on Syfy. We will finally be able to see what happens to Artie (and the world) after last episode’s major cliffhanger. The show is in its new time slot, airing after Syfy’s new show, Defiance. Jack Kenny, showrunner and executive producer for Warehouse 13, explained on a Syfy press call how he has no say in what time slot the show is given. He also explained that he’s not sure if time slots really make much of a difference anymore: “I don’t know that it hurts or helps anymore, especially on a show that’s been on for a while. People just type it into the DVRs and grab it.”

Despite Syfy premiering Warehouse 13 tonight, the first episode has been up for a while on various outlets such as Hulu and On Demand, so Kenny and star Joanne Kelly (Myka) stress the importance of tuning in to watch it live even if you’re already seen the episode. Kenny stated, “But let me add to that please, please, please watch our show live Monday night at least for the next three weeks so our numbers are huge and we get picked up for Season 5.” I’m a fan of the show so I, too, will also implore you to tune in live tonight. We want that fifth season!

The rest of this season will have a sleuth of guest stars. Right out of the gates in the premiere episode Buffy fans will be excited to see James Marsters, and, later in the season Anthony Stewart Head. Jack Kenny and Eddie McClintock took turns naming off other familiar faces we’ll be seeing including the return of H.G. Wells (Jaime Murray). Kenny said in episode 13 Pete and Myka fall into a “world of film noir” and are joined by Missi Pyle and Enrico Colantoni, “sort of a Galaxy Quest reunion.” And Lost fans will be excited to know that Cynthia Watros (Libby) will also be in an episode.

Sounds like there’s a lot to look forward to in the next 10 episodes, so strap in and get watching, people, so the Warehouse 13 train can keep funded and keep rolling.
