Review: The Purge

The+Purge+Movie

In 2022, people will no longer have to find an appropriate, law abiding outlet for all of their pent up aggression- the purge will provide an outlet for them. The Purge came in first at the box office its opening weekend, but is it powerful enough to purge the other films?

The Purge makes a very interesting statement about the nature of people. It indicates that humans are inherently violent, and, if we’re given one day out of the year to do whatever we want without consequence, the other 364 days of the year would essentially be crime free, and the unemployment/homelessness rate would also shrink to nearly zero. The film also shows that even though the rule states that any crime is permitted, everyone immediately goes for murder. Hmmm…whatever happened to just wanting to steal a TV?

Conceptually, I love this film. It’s a unique and intriguing theory behind the evil in human nature, and the premise is really cool, but The Purge doesn’t quite explore it satisfactorily. When it comes down to it, the film is a classic home invasion story with an overlay of metaphors regarding the rich’s hatred of the poor. It’s an enjoyable film, but doesn’t reach the awesome factor. One of the problems is that the baddies aren’t shown to be bad enough. Yes, they looked creepy as hell, and you’ll spend more than a little time anticipating all sorts of horrible things from them, but then things don’t lead to a big enough payoff. I suppose the ending’s purpose is to show that people can be something other than savages, but that moral victory didn’t scratch the annoying itch building up in action oriented souls.

The film is really violent, but there’s only one really good action sequence and the rest is made up of quick little spurts. A sizable proportion of the film is a prolonged game of hide and seek, which is really tense for a little while, but eventually things get repetitive and dull.

All in all, the concept is great but the film is only pretty good- still enjoyable, but with a few problems. I’d love to see another film exploring the idea of the purge in a way that doesn’t become the typical home invasion movie.

Time Until Action: A long ass time.

Best Kill: James (Ethan Hawke) shoots a female invader standing on top of the pool table, which isn’t  impressive itself, but what is impressive is the fall she takes.  The blast of the huge gun James is packing knocks the woman off her feet, and the square of her back slams into the pool table, flipping her entire body forward to the ground. Ouch! That stunt person deserves a cookie!

Action Rating: 1 Urge to Purge, out of 5!

Overall Rating: 3 Urges to Purge, out of 5!

The Expendables 3 Packs on the Power!

500px-Expendables_3_-_IGN's_Dream_Cast

Lionsgate has finally given a release date for The Expendables 3- mid-August, 2014. The second installment outdid the first one in both the action and the fun department, and if the casting has any indicator of how the third one will be, it stands to be craziest of them all. Aside from the regular team of expendable badasses, several new faces are in “advanced negotiations” to be in the third film according to Deadline. For those who thought the action in The Expendables wasn’t crazy enough, well, who better to up the ante than over-the-top actor Nicolas Cage? Other new additions include Milla Jovovich, Jackie Chan, and Wesley Snipes. It’s been a while since I’ve seen these actors in a really good action flick (Snipes has a pretty good excuse for not being in any films lately, what with going to prison for tax evasion) so I’m am so happy to see their additions. Now if they’d just add Cynthia Rothrock or Gina Carano we’d be all set. The Expendables 3 will rock theaters August 15, 2014. Let the countdown begin!

Machete Kills Trailer Released!

Machete-2-movie

Danny Trejo reprises his role as Machete, a machete-wielding bad ass, in Machete Kills . The first film was insanely fun and insanely bloody, and the sequel seems to, at the very least, bring a lot of recognizable cast members including but not limited to: Michelle “Dies more than Sean Bean” Rodriguez,  Amber “I Drive Angry” Heard, Charlie “Winning” Sheen, Mel “Never take our freedom” Gibson, Jessica “Jess” Alba, and  Lady “I have a Poker Face” Gaga. I am excited to see some over-the-top action and gore! Machete Kills hacks into theaters September 13, 2013.

Coming Attraction: Riddick (2013)!

Riddick-2013

Riddick’s not the nicest of guys.

Thanks to the success of Fast & Furious 4 we’ve seen a resurgence of movies that run on Diesel. Case in point, two of his somewhat popular previous movies, xXx and The Chronicles of Riddick, are getting sequels. Not much is known about the new Riddick movie other than there’s probably monsters, Riddick will say cool things while looking cool, and hopefully someone will get killed via cup again. If this installment is successful I imagine we’ll be seeing more Riddick in the future. Whether that’s a good thing or not is up to you. Riddick chronicles its way into theaters September 6, 2013.

Coming Attraction: The World’s End!

the-worlds-end-1024x768

What I will say is this- it’s not the end of the world.

Director Edgar Wright and his leading boys Simon Pegg and Nick Frost may not specialize in action movies, per se, but their hellaciously hilarious comedies always have a healthy dose of action to them. Case in point: their newest film, The World’ End, looks like it’ll have more than just a few yuks- there’s some battles with robot/alien/whatever the hell those badguys are. This British comedy trio has never failed to impress, so I’m expecting another great comedy with a dash of action to it when The World’s End ends theaters on August 23. Check out the trailer below!

Review: Fast & Furious 6 Revs Up My Engine

fast+furious+6+slider

Tyrese Gibson stars as a flying squirrel.

(Spoilers below, but it’s for a Fast & Furious movie, so it’s not like the story is that big of a deal)

The Fast & Furious franchise is the only series that beats out Rambo in how confusing and messed up the titles are. We are on the sixth installment now and thankfully they’re starting to just number the films so we can all keep them straight, instead of going with titles like Faster & Furiouser or Fastest & Furiousest.

Fast & Furious 6 ( also known as Furious 6, according to the title card) brings back the series’ large cast of characters for another hellaciously fun joy ride. Director Justin Lin and his team of writers did a great job at balancing out the massive number of characters while keeping things fast-paced and straightforward. With so much talent on the screen at one time, it could be difficult to give each person their own time to shine in the action scenes. I mean, we’ve got Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Gina Carano, and Michelle Rodriguez, who are all established action actors, and that’s not including the rest of the team, like Paul Walker, Ludacris, Gal Gadot, Sung Kang, and Tyrese Gibson, (I’ll refer to this group as The Toretto Commandos from here on out) who’ve been around in previous films and need time to show off as well.  But Furious 6 manages all of these elements with style, giving each of the Toretto Commandos a specific role to play. One exception to that, however, is Mia (Jordana Brewster), who drew the short straw and gets saddled with taking care of her and Bryan (Paul Walker)’s kid, so she’s missing for 97% of the film and holding a baby for a majority of the time she’s on screen.

fast-and-furious-6-picture04

BOOM!

The action in Furious 6 is some of the best to hit cinemas in years. Something’s always happening, whether it’s a race, a chase, or a punch to the face. The driving/fight scene choreographers do an awesome job- the car chases feature some complicated weaving, zigging, zagging, ramping, and crashing going on, and the same goes for the fight scenes.

While the action stays in high gear throughout the movie, there’s a section in the middle that drags a bit, but it’s honestly not that much of a drag. Other than that, there are a couple of things I wish the filmmakers had done:

  • I wish they had used Gina Carano in more fight scenes. She only gets to fight Michelle Rodriguez twice. Also, did I miss some kind of rule about girls only being able to fight girls? Carano proves she can fight guys in Haywire, and she’s a professional MMA fighter, so let the woman fight!
  • I wish the team would have outsmarted the baddies instead of just chasing them the whole time and eventually out-brawling them. The previous films, especially #5 since it was a heist movie, had the team using their brains and coming up with a smart plan that misdirected everyone. The adrenaline glands are here, but Furious 6 is missing some brains.
  • I wish Letty had remembered something from the past. She didn’t have to remember her whole life, but ending the film with her saying nothing felt familiar and she still didn’t remember anything is a tiny bit of a letdown considering the amount of work everyone put into recovering this amnesiac lady.
fast_and_furious_6_trailer

The Fast and Furious team.

Anyone not watching Furious 6 is losing out on fast cars, well choreographed fights, and a slammin’ cast. This entry in this crowded, oddball franchise ups the human element a bit, making you care more about what happens to everyone, and, again, it’s just a balls-out good action movie.

Time Until Action: ~ 0 seconds

Best Fight Scene: This is a tough decision- I mean Han and Roman had a great fight with the dude in the subway station (and by great fight I mean hilariously bad for them since they get their asses kicked). In the end I’ll have to go with Letty (Rodriguez) vs. Riley (Carano) in the subway station. This throwdown is a hard hitting brawl between two people whose goal is to pound on the other until they stop moving. Carano, as always, pulled off some amazing moves and, Rodriguez fought back with her trademark ferocity. The fight also sticks to what each of the characters realistically could do: Riley is obviously a trained officer of the law, and Letty learned how to fight on the streets, so Riley kept to the professional moves, while Letty went wild and then got the hell out of there.

Best Explosion: The big finale takes place on a plane that looks as large as Nebraska, moving down a runway that must run the length of California based on how long they spend there. The Toretto Commandos bring down the plane as it’s about to take off, and it crashes into the pavement in a cavalcade of explosions, then slides to a stop in one gigantic fiery ball.

Action Rating: 5 totally Awesome Souped-up Custom Cars, out of 5!

The Fast and the Furious’ New Director?!?

Fast & Furious 6 is out this weekend, and if you’re an action junkie like yours truly, you’re probably super pumped. This flick reunites previous Fast/Furious cast members for what promises to be another high-throttle, heist-pulling, punch-throwing extravaganza. You can expect my review soon, but since the movie isn’t quite out yet (and since I’m trying to juggle a billion things at the moment) I thought I’d whet your appetites with a quick little piece of classic internet goodness.
