Review: You’re Next (2013)

you-re-next03

When it comes to psychopathic murderers, having them tell you “you’re next” is a very bad thing. Whatever they have planned for you rarely involves petting puppies, but it’s hard to GTFO when these same psychos have booby-trapped your escape route. What to do, what to do.

In You’re Next, The Davidson family has to come up with their own plan to GTFO quickly when they’re faced with the same situation. A group of bloodthirsty sadists have surrounded their house and begun shooting arrows through the windows. They’ve also booby-trapped the exits and disabled the cars making an escape nearly impossible. Why are they doing all this? How many of them are there? Where are they? Who will be next?

You’re Next is SURPRISINGLY good at answering all those questions. In fact, the film, as a whole, is surprisingly good. I went in with few expectations, not knowing much about the story other than it being about a family trapped in a house while under attack from psychos. At first glance, you might think it’s one of those horrible, predictable films where baddies kill everyone except one girl, and then she decides to fight for survival. That’s only partly true. There are twists and turns that, if you don’t read the IMDB description, you won’t see coming- so don’t read it. Go in blind, although, even if you do read it, it doesn’t spoil all the twists so you’re still okay.

If you haven’t seen the film, I recommend stopping here. Go see the film before reading on unless you really don’t care about Spoilers.

Beware spoilers below!

You’re Next stunned the hell out of me when the heroine, Erin (Sharni Vinson), morphed into survival mode immediately. All too often do the horror heroines scream, shake, and act foolishly before saying “enough” and facing their foes. And that is probably normal real life behavior, but they shouldn’t all do that in films. It’s pretend, you can have your character do whatever the hell you want them to do, and sometimes it’s nice to see some baddies mess with the wrong person and get their asses utterly handed to them- which is the case with You’re Next. Here Erin fights back with a vengeance and shows no mercy for her foes from the very first moment an arrow hits flesh.

She doesn’t just go toe-to-toe with them and beat them with her brawn. She outsmarts them. It’s refreshing to see a character use their brain and skills… and the occasional meat tenderizer. She’s not just some superhuman chick, though. The writer, Simon Barrett made sure to give logical reasons behind her Rambo-esque mettle and skillset, which is a little tidbit that helps give the film extra oomph.

Other than the great female protagonist, the film followed a pretty well worn path, but it’s enjoyable, still produces several jump scares, and gets pretty gory. You’re Next is a shiny gem in the mud-and-blood-caked horror genre.

Best Line: “Why the f*** not?”

Best Kill: Erin fights a baddie in the kitchen. She grabs a blender and smacks him in the face with it. Then, once the glass container on top is no longer in the way, she turns the blender upside down, shoving the blades into the top of the baddie’s head! As if that’s not implausible enough, she plugs in the blender (which is, let’s face it, what the audience is all rooting for anyways), turns it on, and blends his grey matter into a very fine smoothie.

Action Rating: 3 Brain Smoothies, out of 5!

AFC Classic: Tron Legacy!

Tron: Legacy is one of the very few films that I would suggest watching in 3D. It looked amazing and the 3D was great. The Grid is meant to be seen in 3D, man, and in 3D, it shall be seen!

If you haven’t seen the first Tron, the sequel might be a little confusing. plot wise, but overall things get explained pretty nicely. A major source of confusion could be the fact that there are two Jeff Bridges! In Tron: Legacy Bridges reprises his role as Kevin Flynn, the computer programmer responsible for the digital world the film is set in. He also plays a younger computer version of himself. Clu, the leader of The Grid, and a real butthole. Bruce Boxleitner reprises his role as Alan Bradley. The only one missing who was in the original is Cindy Morgan (Yori). What happened there? Anyway, newcomer Garrett Hedland takes the role of Kevin’s son, who finds a way to enter The Grid in order to find his father and bring him home, and Olivia Wilde portrays the quirky, yet badass, Quorra.

Once Flynn enters the grid, we’re treated to a smorgasbord of awesome, well-paced action, action with the added bonus that, on The Grid, the computer programs in human form don’t shed any blood. making it possible to have the most brutal kills you’ll ever see in a Disney movie- you just don’t think about it because there’s no blood. So even though Tron: Legacy has several slow bits, the action is great and is really enhanced by the 3D, instead of being forced and distracting. So I officially stamp my approval on Tron: Legacy.

Time Until Real Action Starts: ~ 31 minutes.

Baddies: Clu and pretty much anybody else dressed in red.

Best Line: “You’re really messing with my Zen, man.”

Best Kill: A program flying a plane gets shot through the face, leaving a huge hole. Well, at least he won’t have to worry about needing glasses!

Best Explosion: Clu leaves behind grief and destruction where ever he goes and a club on The Grid is no exception. As Clu leaves the club, he plants some bombs, which detonate and destroy the entire club in a blue ball of plasma.

Action Rating: 3 ½ Skin Tight Digi-Suits, out of 5

Tony Jaa Buckles Up for Fast & Furious 7?

tony-jaa_the_protector_005

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thai martial artist Tony Jaa may be joining the cast of Fast & Furious 7: Furiouser Harder. Jaa is a man known for performing unbelievable martial arts stunts using little to no special effects- just good ol’ fashioned awesomeness- so the addition of him and fellow F&F newcomer Jason Statham probably means we are going to see some serious smackdowns in this next flick. It’s unknown what role he may be playing, but I’m guess that he’s going to play Jason Statham’s right-hand-man/bodyguard. After all, if there’s anyone who could believably play Jason Statham’s bodyguard, it’s the Ong-Bakinator himself. Regardless of his role, one thing’s for sure- adding Tony Jaa is going to make this movie 10,000% more amaze-balls. Check the video clip below for a montage of some of his best action.

Coming Attraction: Ethan Hawke Wants to Go Away, Getaway

Getaway-2013-Movie-Image

Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke are hopelessly hopeless.

Ethan Hawke, why don’t you go away, Getaway, stay away, Getaway, get away Getaway?

Arrested Development gags aside, below we have the trailer for Ethan Hawke’s newest thriller, Getaway, which, unfortunately, has nothing to do with AD. What it does have to do with, however, is betrayal, kidnapping, blackmail, and baby-faced Selena Gomez trying to look like she’s not still fourteen. Getaway seems to be a fairly rudimentary thriller, so we’ll just have to wait and see whether this one is worth checking out in theaters or if we should just get away from Getaway, which arrives August 30, 2013.

Loosely based on a true event, a group of ronin conspire revenge against the guy who took their master from them. Kai (Keanu Reeves) is the white guy they made up for this movie where real-ish Ronin fight made up monsters.  Along side Reeves you’ll also see Rinko Kikuchi, Hiroyuki Sanada, and at least 44 other actors. 47 Ronin is a Christmas present from Hollywood to all of us action fans, so get ready to unwrap it December 25, 2013.

Sneak Peek of The White Queen Episode 2

price for power 2

STARZ’s “The White Queen” returns tonight with it’s second episode, “The Price of Power.” Being a woman back in the 1400s was pretty tough on it’s own without adding the stresses of being crowned Queen against everyone’s wishes. Now, Elizabeth (Rebecca Ferguson) might enjoy a life of luxury but for how long? Her rise to royalty came with a large bag full of enemies who’d like nothing more but to see her fall… or die. Check out the preview clips for the second episode, airing tonight at 9 ET/PT.

Thor: The Dark World Trailer

thor-2-sequel-the-dark-world-logo

“Anyone else?” Thor (Chris Hemsworth) gets a teeny bit cocky in Thor: The Dark World, and rightfully so. Have you seen this guy’s muscles? It’s unbelievable! Put on your adult diapers everyone, the official trailer has been released. Things look pretty epic here (as all Marvel films do) and it seems we’re going to be getting more of that deliciously deviant Loki here, so slashfic writers, get your keyboards warmed up! Thor: The Dark World summons the thunder into theaters November 8, 2013.

Review: 2 Guns (2013)

2gunstrailer

You know what they say, two guns are better than one…unless you have no ammunition. In the case of 2 Guns, two leading men are definitely better than one. Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg join forces to bring audiences an action comedy about two guys who rob a bank across from the diner that sells the best doughnuts around…which turns out to be a big no-no.

2 Guns isn’t as bad as I had feared. I’m not the biggest Wahlberg fan, so I came into this film with very low expectations, but, fortunately, it surpassed them. I wouldn’t say hilarious, since the jokes are just like Wahlberg’s films- hit and miss- but the bromance that develops between these two characters will grow on you like a fugly little dog- at first you crinkle your nose, but in the end you’ll begrudgingly smile at the little fella. Washington and Wahlberg really bring a higher level of acting than the usual action flicks. The supporting characters are great just as the actors are who play them. Bill Paxton, James Marsden, and Edward James Olmos play their characters with an evil finesse.

The story is as generic as it can get with an action comedy- everyone in the world will see every beat and twist coming from a mile away, except for Bobby (Washington) and Stig (Wahlberg), which really calls their intelligence into question.

The action consists of hide-and-seek shootouts, car chases, and a few explosions, all of which are mighty fine. Things look realistic and keep the entertainment flowing with a few decent-sized spurts of action throughout the film and then a big-ass finale.

Though 2 Guns doesn’t break the mold of filmmaking, it’s still a pretty fun movie.

Action Rating: 3 Guns, out of 5!
