Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is finally here! After spending an exhaustive amount of time with it, here’s what I have to say about it.
What’s awesome:
-The graphics. The game is bright and beautiful, as well as having some surprising level of detail. Check out the clothes on each of the characters; they’re all different, from Crimson Viper’s pleather pants to Akuma’s scratchy martial arts uniform. The characters, special moves, and backgrounds are all kaleidoscopic rainbows of color, and I wish more games would use the entire color palette like this instead of making everything so gritty, ie brown.
-Gameplay. The Capcom Vs. games have always been known for high-flying, fast-paced, superpowered gameplay, and this is no exception. This game packs the same combo-crazy, character switching goodness of the previous games, only with a better sense of balance between the characters, and none of those nasty infinite combos that people were so fond of in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.
-Extras. The art galleries are a nice touch. I always like being able to more deeply examine the art to a game, I think it really helps you appreciate the level of work and diligence that went into making it.
-Writing. An extra bit of oomph went into the writing for this game. Characters have specific intro and victory taunts depending on who they’re fighting, which really makes you feel like these two characters are going toe-to-toe.
-Voice acting. I am an incredible voice acting buff. I pay major attention to who is voicing who in games, and I’m really glad to see that Capcom went to the trouble of getting actors to reprise the voices of their characters, from Steve Blum playing Wolverine for the umpteenth time, to the ultra-badass Reuben Langdon once again stepping into Dante’s red coat.
Not so awesome: Um, NOTHING. I LOVE THIS GAME.
Characters I wish were included: Strider Hiryu, Samonosuke, Captain Commando, Ghost Rider, Nightcrawler, Nero and/or Virgil
Characters I wish would take a hike: Sentinel, Bionic Commando (If they’re gonna have the bionic commando, they should’ve made it the NES guy not this dork in dreadlocks), Felicia, Shuma Gorath.
Overall Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is an incredibly fun follow-up to MvC2, and has the same level of Capcom quality we’ve come to expect. Go play it! Right now!
@RyanDM86
I keep hearing how it isn’t as good as 2. But usually for the most arbitrary cynicism to adhere to their traditionalism as comic lovers and/or gamers. If it’s fun, it’s fun. I like the line-up. Wasn’t what was expected and that was bold. Plus, the diversity brings more fun and challenge to the game.
Waiting for the price to go down, honestly. The possible future DLCs has me waiting. May give me more initiative to buy. I’m guessing if there are, Strider and Mega Man are still up for being in this installment.
Love that you want to see Ghost Rider and Samanosuke Akechi, as well. *rock gesture with a nod* Very surprised, with Onimusha having a successful series with 5 games, that they wouldn’t’ve had him in it. Then again, where Rock? Guy’s kinda sorta Capcom’s mascot, so… We can hope.

@Ryan I know some people complain about the cost of DLC, and I do hate it when a game comes out and then they immediately slap on a DLC pack containing stuff that should have been in the full game (Cough cough, costume packs), but in some cases, I think DLC can really help extend the life of a game. Case in point, the more new MvC3 characters they add via DLC, the better. Keeps my hope alive that I’ll be playing my dream team of Strider, Samonosuke and Ghost Rider someday.
And yeah, I’ve heard some grumblings from the MvC2 purists about the game being different, but come on, guys, it’s been ten years. If MvC3 was the exact same game, only prettier, then what’s the point of making it?
As always, a great write-up Katrina.
I totally agree: the ORIGINAL Bionic Commando is where it’s at. Dreadlock dork really does need to hit the bricks.
Be interesting to see who/what gets added through DLC!
