Dallas native James Hampton has appeared in many great films during his acting career, along with plenty of TV. His IMDB filmography lists more than 100 projects in which he has acted, directed, and sometime written. In the 1960s he was in the cast of the television series F Troop and The Doris Day Show. Through the 1970s and beyond, he was an integral part of friend Burt Reynolds’ regular crew, working alongside him in The Longest Yard, The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing, W. W. and the Dixie Dance Kings, and later Evening Shade. The 1980s saw him play paternal werewolf Harold Howard in the comedy Teen Wolf, its theatrical sequel, and even the animated series. The 1990s kept him busy with films like Pump Up the Volume and one of the most critically acclaimed films of all time, Billy Bob Thornton’s Sling Blade. Current work includes the SyFy Channel original movie Fire from Below which debuts tonight.
While working on her Attack of the Show! story about the advantages and disadvantages of small versus large fan conventions, the Chick sat down to speak with James at Dallas Comic-Con. He turned out to be a very friendly man with a great laugh.
AFC: I am here with James Hampton from Teen Wolf and The Longest Yard along with many things that he’s done. So how many conventions have you gone to?
Hampton: I don’t know. I expect maybe 8 or 9, just in the last couple of years.
AFC: Have they been big ones, small ones, all the sizes?
Hampton: (laughs) I don’t think I’ve seen all the sizes, but they’ve all been wonderful. I like the smaller ones because you have a chance to talk to people and they have a chance to ask me questions, and I enjoy that.
AFC: More time with the fans.
Hampton: Yeah, I think so. For me, that means a lot.
AFC: Are there any projects that you have coming out right now?
Hampton: Yes, I have a movie that’s coming out this fall called Fire from Below starring Kevin Sorbo, and it’s another science fiction movie. I love science fiction people.
AFC: Me too.
Hampton: They’re great. Great movie buffs. They know every science fiction movie that was ever made, and I was in some of those.
Very cool interview! I just watched Mr. Hampton in “Pump Up The Volume” not 3 days ago!. He’s also one of the great movie dads because of the Teen Wolf films (yes, I am a fan, even of the sequel). Looking great Mr. Hampton!
I am interested in connecting with Jim strictly because we are 2nd or 3rd cousins and family is dwindeling fast. I was born in Dallas,Tx. september 17, 1950 to Burley Bee Carter and Emily D. Carter. My mother stayed with his parents Ivan and Edna the last month of her pregnancy because my Daddy had finished mortuary school there in Dallas and moved to Duncan in southern Okla. My Mother said,” She didn’t want to have a baby in that God forsaken country with only family doctors and a small hospital”. Please forward to James and feel free to check me out. My husband and I own Carter-Smart Funeral Home in Duncan, Ok. 1312 W. Oak Ave. 73533 Thank you, Suzie Smart
