Dylan Dog: Dead of Night (2011) – Dead on Arrival?

I would like to clarify something: Dylan Dog: Dead of Night sucks as an action film! Don’t get confused by its label of ‘action comedy horror’ film, because it ain’t action,  and it’s not all that much of a comedy horror. It’s mostly a paint-by-the-numbers detective story.

Dylan Dog (Brandon Routh) is a private investigator of sorts who is well known to the undead creatures of New Orleans. When Elizabeth’s (Anita Briem) father is killed by a werewolf, she calls on Dylan Dog and his assistant Marcus (Sam Huntington) to help solve the mystery.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night was a very average film for me, dancing the line between mediocre and kinda crappy. The story was all right, the comedy was amusing, and the action was basically missing. Sam Huntington is the best thing in this film. He was likable, funny, and did a great job being an undead creature. Brandon Routh also did a fine job, though he didn’t always have that great of material to work with. Anita Briem, on the other hand, not so much. She wasn’t horrible, but she wasn’t great with her flat delivery of every line.

As stated earlier, this is not an action film. Dylan Dog has a rating of PG-13 and probably has about 13 minutes of action total. Hey, that’s all right though. I understand not every film needs to be blood and guts…I guess. It’s just that when there isn’t any action, I am forced to focus on the story; therefore, I am less forgiving of storyline problems. In an action movie, you don’t care about those sorts of things because of all the beautiful explosions distracting you.

So what the hell am I saying? I’m saying it was an okay, average, somewhat entertaining film. If you’re interested in zombies, vampires, or Dogs named Dylan, you might give it a try.

Time Until Action Starts: ~ forever

Best Line: “You know what they say about werewolf hair, it doesn’t lie.” Of course! I say that all the time!

Action Rating: ½ Brandon Routh Shirtless Scenes, out of 5.

Damn… had high hopes for this one, but it sounds like it’s going to be a letdown. I’ll still see it myself, of course, but now that I’ve gotten a solid ActionChick review, I at least know what I’ll be in for.

If you want to see what this film was *supposed* to look like, go searching for “Cemetery Man”. It’s a bit older, but is the first film made that was based on the Dylan Dog comics. It’s far, far superior. I still wouldn’t call it an action movie, as it’s more of a zombie flick. I’m still puzzled as to why this one was even made..

Thanks for the review….I think I will pass on this movie. The trailer didn’t look all that great. Routh looks better as Superman.
