Word from Mitch Hurwitz, creator of the legendary and short-lived comedy series Arrested Development, is that the show will be returning in not only movie form, but for a 10 episode run on Fox! At a New Yorker Festival event, attended by both cast and creators alike, Mitch Hurwitz opened up to the audience about what had been going on.
Turns out he and co-producer/narrator Ron Howard had been “talking about this for ages and trying to get this going,” though there were a number of hoops for them to jump through, first. They go on to explain: “We don’t completely own the property, there are business people involved and studios and that kind of thing. Just creatively, I have been working on the screenplay for a long time and found that as time went by, there was so much more to the story. In fact, where everyone’s been for five years became a big part of the story. So in working on the screenplay, I found even if I just gave five minutes per character to that back story, we were halfway through the movie before the characters got together.”
So, to top off the discussion, Hurwitz dropped this bomb on the audience: “We’re trying to do a limited-run series into the movie…. We’re basically hoping to do nine or 10 episodes, with almost one character per episode.”
Later on in the day, Jason Bateman confirmed the news via twitter:

So, Arrested Development fans like me will have a reason to get up in the morning again! One of the greatest comedy’s to ever air will return, in a glorious 10 episode run topped off with a movie! Who could ask for more?
Very cool. Of course, now we have to be patient, and wait. And of course, even after the movie is over, we’ll still want more….
