Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that have hurt you
and you’d stay.

Well Cher, now you can turn back time thanks to the Prince of Persia and the Dagger of Time! Yay! Turning back time so that you didn’t say that stupid comment about your girlfriend’s mom’s botched boob job is just one of the many ways a Dagger of Time could be used; however, if put in the wrong hands, it could be used for evil things like stealing candy from babies, or slapping the elderly! The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time showcases that exact point for us all. You see, Prince Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) discovered a rather unique looking dagger as well as a gorgeous Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) during a raid on the holy city of Alamut. The dagger has the power to turn back time up to one minute and only the person holding the dagger knows what happened. As you’d expect, there are quite a few people who want to get their hands on this dagger, so Tamina and Dastan go on an adventure to try to keep the Dagger of Time out of the wrong hands.

First of all, this is a film called the Prince of Persia, and both neither the two leads nor the villain are Persian. However, Arterton has that princess kind of gorgeous look and Gyllenhaal does look similar to the video game dude so I’m not lighting the torches and ready to storm the castle in protest. Still, they couldn’t have found an actual Persian to play any of the main characters? Did they think it was just ok to dye everyone’s hair black and slap some spray-tan on them and call them Persian? Regardless, I thought Arterton and Gyllenhaal did a fine job in the film.

Despite a few little flaws here and there, Prince of Persia is an enjoyable summer film. The action itself was absolutely awesome! It started quickly and barely stopped. They explained the plot as they were on the go instead of talking for 20 minutes about what’s happening, and their feelings and other crap like that. Prince of Persia stayed true to the video game in the action department. Most of the action was running up walls and doing acrobatic style things rather than just one hit and it’s over. On the other hand, because of the rating and the emphasis on acrobatics, there wasn’t much in the way of blood and guts. I kept expecting a few heads to roll and it never happened. Darn you, Disney! Still, it’s a highly enjoyable summer flick, so if you’re in the mood to tune out for a bit and see some good looking people doing cool stuff, then you’ll probably want to check out Prince of Persia.

Beware of the Spoilers Below!

Time Until Action Starts: ~ 2 minutes.

Baddies: Lo and behold it was Uncle Nizam!

Best Kill: One of the baddies had Dastan cornered and was about to have his snake-minion bite him and then stab him with a dagger. Tamina came up behind them, grabbed the snake as it was striking and directed it at the baddie. The snake bit him right in the eye, then Dastan shoved the baddies’ dagger (with baddies’ hand still on it) right into his stomach. The baddie keeled over from his own weapon and his own snake!

Best Explosion: Dastan was storming the gates of Alamut and spotted a massive enemy force a-coming. In order to protect his soldiers, he dumped a huge cauldron of flammable liquid on the ground, lighting it as it fell, and causing a massive explosion right in the path of the enemy!

Action Rating: 5 Ostrich Kart Races, out of 5

You this a 5 out of 5??? I’m surprised. I haven’t seen it yet and I’m on the borderline of whether I want to or not. I don’t buy Gyllenhaal as the lead character, he doesn’t look Middle Easterner at all. And he’s not macho despite his nice set of abs. I’m a fan of the producer though and the costumes look great! I think I’ll give it a try.

  4. From the 3 trillion commercials I’ve seen for this on TV, I’ve decided to wait for this one on DVD. Looks like fun…but doesn’t look worthy of the fifty bucks I’d have to spend to get me & my fam into the theater.

I’ve been wanting to see a good movie lately, I think I might just see this one especially since it’s Disney (which usually never disappoints) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (which I usually enjoy). I’m really looking forward to “Inception,” but it’s not out yet. And, I was thinking about seeing “Splice” but I’m still up in the air on that one. I think this may do for now 🙂

    Nice review!
