Action Heroine versus Horror Heroine – What’s the Diff?
…actionchick: Ah, but you see, that’s why I said horror heroine rather than horror chick. Most horror chicks are victims. Only 1 gets to be the Final Girl. The Final Girl (horror heroine) generally does not take her top off. In terms of the actual heroines, the action heroine takes her top off a whole lot more than virginal horror heroine. Slickriptide: Horror Chick: Punished for sexuality. Action Chick: Sex is a weapon. quicksilverwest: Female Act… Continue reading

Interview: Horror Director Tim Sullivan (Scream Queens 2, 2001 Maniacs, Driftwood)
…they consider better. I’m looking for somebody who is passionate about the horror genre, who is ready to give their all to a horror film and is passionate about the craft – not being a celebrity, a poster on somebody’s locker room, or somebody who people follow on twitter or TMZ. Katrina: Right, right. So what made you decide to come do Scream Queens? Tim: Well, I was very humbled and honored to receive an invitation from the producers, Joke and B… Continue reading

Interview with Nobody Gets Out Alive Director Jason Christopher
…y. AFC: What kind of films would you like to do in the future? Stay in the horror genre? Jason: Horror movies are without a doubt my favorite genre. I wanted to make NGOA because I wanted to say thank you to the 70’s and 80’s horror flicks that I unfortunately didn’t get to witness first hand. I was born in ’87 so I got the 90’s horror flicks, blah. But I have a Christmas movie in me that I’d love to do for my Mum haha, a family movie for my niece… Continue reading

Movie Chicks on Horror Flicks: Diablo Cody Calls Jennifer’s Body Feminist – Is It?
…screenwriter Diablo Cody talked about the importance of telling a feminist horror story: Karyn Kusama and I are both outspoken feminists. We wanted to subvert the classic horror model of women being terrorized. I want to write roles that service women. I want to tell stories from a female perspective. I want to create good parts for actresses where they’re not just accessories to men…If I had gone to this movie as a teenage girl I would’ve come ou… Continue reading

The McPherson Tape (1989) aka UFO Abduction: The First Found Footage Horror Film
…le and adds to the authenticity of the found footage essence. If you are a horror fan and are curious to see the first found footage horror film, The McPherson Tape is worth checking out. I mean, it’s not a great film, but it’s an interesting bit of cinema history, a precursor to the found footage boom of the ‘10s, and, clocking in at 1 hour and 6 minutes, it goes down quickly. Plus it features my favorite character, five-year-old Michelle, who co… Continue reading

From SXSW: The Innkeepers (2011)
…is not an action film, so there was little to nil action. It is however, a horror film, and there was little to some horror. It felt like the film couldn’t quite make up its mind what it wanted to be. West screws with your mind by telling you it’s a horror film and then making you wait and wait (and wait) for the horror to begin. While you wait though, West throws you curve balls by adding comedy and prolonged character development. It was 20 minu… Continue reading
Interview: Producers Joke and Biagio (VH1’s Scream Queens 2)
…mpossible. I couldn’t, I couldn’t do it. So I have so much respect for the horror genre and for actors in the horror genre, because like Joke has said several times, horror is really the only genre where an actress is called on, I think, to play every single emotion and play them to the extreme. JOKE: In one film. BIAGIO: In one film. So at an acting level that really drew me to it, to learn about the sort of indie filmmaking experience as well. J… Continue reading
