During my SDCC visit, I had some down time between all the action stuff and happened upon a Quick Draw panel that turned out to be one of my favorites. This panel was hosted by Mark Evanier (Writer, Comics Historian, Groo the Wanderer, Kirby: King of Comics) and featured three very talented artists, Sergio Aragones (Cartoonist, Groo, MAD Magazine), Scott Shaw (Oddball comics), and William Stout (Dinosaur Discoveries, Prehistoric Life Murals). Evanier spouted off things, topics, ideas, or words and the three artists drew whatever was said, kind of like Who’s Line is it Anyway but with sketch art. Each artist’s work was displayed on a screen as they drew so you could see the master minds at work. They were all great, but I have to say that Sergio Aragones was hilarious and extremely quick, both in his wit and his art. He would draw two to three pages while the other two were finishing one. It’s not like the other two were extremely slow, they would finish their drawings in about a minute, Aragones is just the king.
The artists were given caption, “Sit on it” and were told to draw a picture to go with it. This video is Aragones drawing someone flipping off the BP oil spill in approximately 35 seconds! (This was not taken by a professional camera person or with a high tech camera so there are a few shaky movements.)
At one point they brought up three other guest artists (I don’t remember their names, oops) and had them draw the top half of a picture, cover it up, then the other three would finish the bottom half. This video is of the guests drawing the top portion.
And this video is Stout (left), Shaw (middle) and Aragones (right) adding the finishing details.
Other things drawn:
The Hulk as an astronomer by Stout
The Hulk as a janitor by Aragones
The Hulk as a voice actor by Shaw
A great time was had by all and I will definitely be making this Quick Draw panel an annual event.
This is the Action Flick Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!
