You know what they say, two guns are better than one…unless you have no ammunition. In the case of 2 Guns, two leading men are definitely better than one. Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg join forces to bring audiences an action comedy about two guys who rob a bank across from the diner that sells the best doughnuts around…which turns out to be a big no-no.
2 Guns isn’t as bad as I had feared. I’m not the biggest Wahlberg fan, so I came into this film with very low expectations, but, fortunately, it surpassed them. I wouldn’t say hilarious, since the jokes are just like Wahlberg’s films- hit and miss- but the bromance that develops between these two characters will grow on you like a fugly little dog- at first you crinkle your nose, but in the end you’ll begrudgingly smile at the little fella. Washington and Wahlberg really bring a higher level of acting than the usual action flicks. The supporting characters are great just as the actors are who play them. Bill Paxton, James Marsden, and Edward James Olmos play their characters with an evil finesse.
The story is as generic as it can get with an action comedy- everyone in the world will see every beat and twist coming from a mile away, except for Bobby (Washington) and Stig (Wahlberg), which really calls their intelligence into question.
The action consists of hide-and-seek shootouts, car chases, and a few explosions, all of which are mighty fine. Things look realistic and keep the entertainment flowing with a few decent-sized spurts of action throughout the film and then a big-ass finale.
Though 2 Guns doesn’t break the mold of filmmaking, it’s still a pretty fun movie.
Action Rating: 3 Guns, out of 5!
This is the Action Flick Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!
