Action Chick Artist Does Official Dig Dug!

From Dig Dug: “Time to Dig!” written and illustrated by Nick Langley.

Read Nick Langley’s Dig Dug comic!

Putting a spin on video games we loved in younger days, Namco Bandai’s ShiftyLook.com website is reimagining many of them as high quality webcomics. In addition to ShiftyLook’s ongoing series like Sky Kid, Xevious, and Wonder Momo, they’ve embarked on an ambitious collaborative project by assembling an eclectic mix of writers and artists ranging from the up-and-coming to some of the most famous webcomics creators of all, not to mention a couple of big names from the comic book industry as well. Working alone or in teams, these creators each take turns producing self-contained stories about a specific classic game, starting with an old school favorite arcade game: Dig Dug.

Dig Dug is one of those iconic games that means a lot to retro gamers, especially those of us who grew up constantly trying to inflate many a Fygar, so we wanted to do something very special for the webcomic,” said Rob Pereyda, Producer and Editor-in-Chief of ShiftyLook for Namco Bandai Games Inc., “and I think we just might have the comics team-up of the summer and a must read for video games and webcomics fans alike.”

Take a look at these Dig Dug creators and gape in awe:

The names in bold belong to some of our artists. ShiftyLook invited Nick Langley, as the creator of Action Flick Chick Katrina Hill’s Action Chick avatar and webcomic, to join the collaboration. Nick’s having quite a year. The book Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight (which includes several illustrations by Nick) has been incredibly popular; the Dig Dug comic he put together has debuted; and in November, The Geek Handbook: Practical Skills and Advice for the Likeable Modern Geek, which he illustrated extensively, hits stores in time for Christmas.

Read his comic and give this fine young man some positive feedback on “Dig Dug: Time to Dig!”

Who Would You Cast for The Expenda-Belles?

The internet has been on fire with the news of a female version of The Expendables. Variety reports “Adi Shankar’s banner 1984 Private Defense Contractors has tapped Dutch Southern to write an all-female riff on the star-studded action franchise. Shankar (‘The Grey’) will produce for 1984 Private Defense Contractors, which plans to fully finance the ‘Expendables’-inspired project. Company is already in talks with several prominent actresses affiliated with the action genre.”

While most are calling this film Expendables 3, it says “all-female riff” and “Expendables-inspired project,” so I would like to think that it will be a film franchise all unto its own and not a sequel. These women deserve their own spinoff film. Plus, I’m greedy and I want to see an Expendables 3 with more action men and an all-female film. Simon West, director of The Expendables 2, told E! News who he’d like to cast in a female film: “I like the idea of the Expenda-Belles where it’s seven or eight women mercenaries,” he said. “It would be Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Milla Jovovich, the list goes on. Helen Mirren, Jamie Lee Curtis would be great.”

Agreed! My dream team would include Sigourney Weaver, Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Michelle Yeoh, and Chick Norris Award winner Gina Carano as the main team of mercenaries, with special action appearances/cameos by Pam Grier, Linda Hamilton, Cynthia Rothrock, and Helen Mirren. As for the baddies, I would love to see Lena Headey, Lucy Liu, and Lucy Lawless. So those are my picks; everyone else would have to wait for the sequel. Who would you cast?

The Expendables 2: This Time It’s Better!

Expendables 2 accomplished everything the first Expendables set out to do but didn’t. Being the avid action fan that I am, I loved the first film, overall, despite its flaws. Now we have a sequel that flies higher and explodes so much harder, giving audiences the fun action romp they’ve been looking for.

In Expendables 2, the eponymous group of mercenaries is back to their usual shenanigans, killing baddies and saving the innocent. New to the group of seasoned action stars is Liam Hemsworth, playing Billy the Kid, a young vet sporting major sniper skills, and Nan Yu as Maggie, a badass chick dropped into this group of macho men. Together they all set out to stop the biggest, meanest villain ever, the oh-so-cleverly-named Vilain (JCVD), from getting his hands on four tons of plutonium.

The Expendables 2 is every bit the awesome, cheesy, action-packed flick I hoped it would be. JCVD nails his performance as the villain. Schwarzenegger and Willis take turns spouting off one liners so cheesy it’ll clog your arteries, and share a lot more screen time than the first film. In fact, the audience will be super thrilled to see Stallone, Willis, Schwarzenegger, and Chuck Mother-Freaking Norris battling baddies together. Awesome doesn’t begin to describe it.

Liam Hemsworth’s superior acting skills made him kind of stick out from the rest of the cast…in a good way. Whereas most of the other characters were two-dimensional paragons of manliness, Hemsworth’s character had some depth to him, and he portrayed the depth with a thespian skill that almost seemed out of place.

A few other things this Action Chick loved: I loved Jason Statham’s fight when he was dressed like a priest, loved JCVD vs Stallone, loved Willis, Schwarzenegger, Stallone fighting together and the shot of them appearing through the glass, love the opening fight sequence that seemed to last for at least 20 minutes with unique spins on the classic maneuvers, and loved the goofy ‘90s action cheesiness of Chuck Norris’ scenes.

I do wish there were more hand to hand fights from Crews, Lundgren, Nan, and Couture but there just wasn’t a whole lot of time to feature everyone. Even so, everyone did get a moment to shine and the film was balls out fun and full of action. If you love action, particularly action from the ‘80s and ‘90s, this movie was made for you.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Expendables 3 coming soon, so I’d like to toss out my list of a few faces I’d like to see included.

Action Chick’s suggested cast list for new actors in Expendables 3:

Clint Eastwood

Wesley Snipes

Donnie Yen

Milla Jovovich

Michelle Rodriguez

Tony Jaa

Vin Diesel

Michael Jai White

The Rock

Channing Tatum

Chris Hemsworth

Jackie Chan

Angelina Jolie

Any other awesome people will just have to wait until Expendables 4, and there are so many other action ladies that they need a film all to themselves.

Time Until Action: ~ 1 second! BOOM!

Action Rating: 5 Action-gasms out of 5.

Falling Skies Season 2 Finale Review!

TNT’s Falling Skiesseason 2 has come to an end with episode “A More Perfect Union.” Now, I may make fun of Falling Skies, but overall I do like the show. It’s different from most television shows out there and isn’t a reality show starring idiots with an IQ of 7. Yay Falling Skies! Season two has had its ups and downs, and the finale ended with more of a pff than a bang. Still, some interesting things developed that will keep me coming back next year.

Here’s what happens:

At the end of the last episode, the 2nd Mass. was trying to meet up with Red Eye, but before they can make the rendezvous point, Red Eye and a whole slew of skitters come to Charleston with Ben in tow. He proposes a plan to kill the overlord alien, Big Mamma Alien (BMA), because she controls all the military actions in their area. If they had killed BMA when they had it in custody, the aliens would have been thrown into utter chaos. So now they have to try to kill BMA again by crawling through underground caves and tunnels up to an alien base where the aliens are developing a doomsday weapon.

After several pissing contests between the General and the 2nd Mass., the 2nd Mass are given permission to carry out the plan to kill BMA. The General then turns and sends his army out to kill all the rebel skitters even though they declared truce.

Hal visits Ben to try to convince him to come back to the 2nd Mass. but Ben says no, he’s staying with the skitters, and Lourdes finds out that Dr. Glass is pregnant and isn’t telling Tom until he’s back from the mission.

Most of the rebel skitters end up dead, with the exception of Red Eye and a few others. The 2nd Mass crawl through the underground tunnels and storm the alien camp to find…nothing. They go about their business setting up bombs and then the skitters show their ugly faces and capture everyone except Dai, who kicks the bucket.

Karen, still mind-controlled by BMA, shows up and ties everyone up and starts torturing them so they’ll give info on the rebellion and how they got there. Evil Karen reveals that Dr. Glass is pregnant, then gives Hal a kiss so evil he goes into a coma. Red Eye comes to their rescue and attacks Big Mamma Alien, getting mortally wounded in the process, and then Tom finishes off BMA rather easily. Red Eye tells them to keep on fighting before dying. The 2nd Mass. blow up the weapon and head back to Charleston.

They come home to a cheering crowd. Oh sure, now they’re all supportive and grateful even though an hour earlier they were trying to lock up the whole 2nd Mass. Locke offers his job to Tom but he declines and says the 2nd Mass must leave.

Hal wakes up from his kiss coma and has some funky bug crawl out of his eye and back into his ear. He looks all evilly into the mirror and turns the light off. Then space ships drop out of the sky and surround Charleston. Then, out of one of these ships steps a new kind of alien. Will it be friend or foe? Find out in season 3!

Likes:

  • The new aliens
  • Hal’s bug
  • Boring ol’ BMA is dead. Time for a new baddie!

Dislikes:

  • The pregnancy story. One the one hand, it gives Dr. Glass some actual plot other than being a wet blanket who saves any wounded main character. On the other hand, using pregnancy as a fallback plot is really lame and cliché.
  • The short fight between the skitters and the 2nd Mass. Actually, there was essentially no fight. They come in, get captured, get set free, and Tom kills Big Mamma Alien with no struggle. WTF! Too easy, total weaksauce.
  • Too much political talk, not enough exciting stuff. Boo!

Schwarzeneggar Returns With The Last Stand (2013)!

Ahnold is finally out of the office and back on the big screen playing a leading action stud with 2013’s The Last Stand, a film which also stars Jaimie Alexander (Sif from Thor), Forest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega, Rodrigo Santoro, Johnny Knoxville, Luis Guzmán, Peter Stormare, Zach Gilford and Genesis Rodriguez! Ahnold plays a sheriff trying to catch a drug cartel leader who escapes and high tails it to get south of the border. He and his noobie crew make a last stand to stop the criminal before loosing him to ol’ Mexico. I’m hoping for a fun, cheesy, good old fashioned Arnold film with this one. Will Arnold be able to pull off  the kind of magic pizazz he had back in the ’80s and ’90s? I have faith in him, but only time will tell. See it in theaters January 18, 2013!
