Thor: The Dark World Teaser Trailer!

Thor-Hotness-D-michael58-31021771-500-275

Thor is coming! Thor is coming! A teaser trailer for the sequel, Thor: The Dark World has been released. Chris Hemsworth returns in all his glory, along with Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston. There’s no better excuse for Thor to see Jane (Portman) again than to save her from the denizens of the dark world of Svartalfheim. She’s the main target of their dastardly plans, and that doesn’t sit well with our boy Thor. Looks like he turns to Loki for some help, and possibly some betrayal, and I can’t wait to see it! Thor: The Dark World thunders into theaters November 8, 2013.

Stallone Chooses New Director for Expendables 3

expendables3casting

Sylvester Stallone has given his much desired approval for a new director for The Expendables 3. Who is the lucky guy? According to Deadline, it’s relatively unknown Patrick Hughes. Aside from a few shorts/commercials, Hughes’ work consists of writing and directing the thriller Red Hill. I’m not familiar with his work, but I will be shortly since Red Hill is on Netflix. Then we’ll see if he gets the Action Chick stamp of approval. Stallone has proven to know what he’s doing in the past, so for now we’ll just have to trust that Hughes will do a great job or else Stallone wouldn’t have chosen him. It’s reported that Hughes will begin work on the film this week and production will begin mid-August. Will he be able to pull off a bigger and more epic installment of The Expendables?

Da Vinci’s Demons Gets a Second Season After One Episode!

Da Vinci's Demons 2013

STARZ’ newest original show, Da Vinci’s Demons, premiered to a whopping 2.14 million viewers opening weekend. This takes the cake for highest ratings STARZ has seen for any of the premieres of any of their shows, a fact that was not lost on them as they immediately ordered a second season. Now, you can watch the first season with the comfort of knowing it won’t get yanked off the air after a few episodes. Production is expected to start in May of this year and season two will hit the air sometime in 2014. If you haven’t watched the show, here are my reasons why you should. Getting up to speed on the show will be a breeze since there have only been a few episodes so far. New installments of Da Vinci’s Demons arrive every Friday at 9pm.

More info on the show from the press release:

Brilliant and passionate, 25-year-old Leonardo da Vinci is an artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer and idealist. As a free thinker, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it.

“Da Vinci’s Demons” stars Tom Riley, who has received wide critical acclaim in the UK for his performances in theater, film and on television and was nominated by the Drama Desk Awards for his performance in the 2011 Tony® Award nominated Broadway play, “Arcadia.”  Riley’s co-stars include Laura Haddock (The Inbetweeners Movie, “Honest,” Captain America: The First Avenger) who plays the celebrated beauty, LucreziaDonati; Elliot Cowan (“Marchlands,” “The Fixer,” “Lost in Austen”) who plays the shrewd de factor ruler of Florence, Lorenzo Medici; Lara Pulver (“True Blood,” “Sherlock,” “Robin Hood”), who plays his wife Clarice Orsini; and Blake Ritson (Serena, “Upstairs Downstairs) plays the ruthless and unwavering Count GirolamoRiario, nephew of Pope Sixtus IV.

Goyer, whoserves as showrunner and directed the first two episodes of the first season, is co-writer of The Dark Knight Trilogy and screenwriter of the highly anticipated Man of Steel premiering June 2013.  Goyer’s additional credits include serving as a script consultant and story developer for “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” and “Black Ops II”, the most successful video game franchise of all time. Julie Gardner is Executive Producer, along with Adjacent Productions’ Head, Jane Tranter.  Tranter and Gardner have been responsible for a plethora of titles in their careers including “Doctor Who,” “Torchwood,” “Little Dorrit,” “Bleak House,” “Girl in a Café,” “Ashes to Ashes” and “State of Play.”

Oblivion: Like Wall-E but Made of Meat

oblivion-movie-directed+by+Joseph+Kosinski

Spoilers Below!

Oblivion gets all the technical things spot on- desolate, inventive world, impressive visual and sound design, and commendable performances. This is the first feature to be created with complete Dolby Atmos surround sound- the “latest state-of-the-art” sound-and indeed it was impressive. In fact, the audio/visual side of things left more of a lasting impression than the actual story.

The first hour drags a bit so that when the film picks up exponentially in the last hour, it’s going to be too little, too late to make a difference with many audience members. While there are glimpses of greatness throughout Oblivion, most of it  ranks a solid “okay.” Much of my lukewarm feelings stemmed from my lack of interest in the characters. The film fails to make you care about what happens to anyone, rendering some of the twists a moot point. Jack (Tom Cruise) and Victoria’s (Andrea Riseborough) relationship holds no interest, since it feels like they’re only together because of their work. They were chosen to do this job, there’s no one else around, so why not hook up? When the mysterious woman from Jack’s past, Julia (Olga Kurylenko), shows up later, it doesn’t incite any feelings of worry for the circumstantial couple, nor are we as interested in her, since Julia has the disadvantage of both diminished screen time and being kind of a dullard.

tumblr_mekxct7hao1qm3qa2o1_500

Likewise, when it turns out the Jack we have gotten to know is one of thousands of clones, it’s not a huge surprise, and it cheapens Jack Prime’s death. Yes, he’s different from the rest because he has a personality and feelings, but it also takes away any real concern for his safety because there are a nigh-infinite number of Jacks that could replace him… which is exactly what they do. While it’s kind of sweet to end with Jack #52 reuniting with Julia, it takes away from Jack Prime’s death and retroactively takes away from his life. It doesn’t matter how many times Jack dies, Julia can just replace him with another. If he makes her mad, she can roll the dice and see if the next Jack is better.

Oblivion contains just about every sci-fi twist in the book, yet fails to enthrall because they’re the typical revelations we’ve seen many times in films like this one- though not all at the same time which, in the end, is a bonus. With so many twists and turns, there’s bound to be one of them you don’t see coming, which puts the film in the “watchable” category. The characters are a bit flat, but overall it’s a decent watch.

Best, Most Interesting Twist: (read in an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice) It’s not a alien, it’s a machine! The whole time we’re made to believe that aliens have attacked Earth, and even though we, the humans, won, we had to move to another planet because ours was trashed. That’s a big fat lie! That’s just what the machines want Jack to think. There are no aliens, and humans didn’t win the war. Machines took over so they could siphon our resources and bleed the planet dry. Bad machines!

Action Rating: 2 ½ Tetrahedrons, out of 5.

5 Reasons to Watch Da Vinci’s Demons

NewLeo

Get to know the most celebrated geek in history with the STARZ original series, Da Vinci’s Demons. This smart, intriguing series explores the life of a 25 year old Leonardo da Vinci. I’ve seen the first two episodes and can’t wait to watch the rest. The pilot episode deals out a lot of information, showing da Vinci’s wits and inventions, as well as his trouble making side. Tom Riley portrays the mastermind masterfully, as something of a mix between Sherlock Holmes, Einstein, and an artiste, making you like him instantly. The first episode, “The Hanged Man” will introduce you to a new world, entertain you with some action, and weave some story threads that will no doubt carry on throughout more episodes. It premieres tonight at 10pm ET/PT after the series finale of Spartacus: War of the Damned,  and then will move to Fridays at 9pm ET/PT. Not convinced yet? Here are a few more reasons why you should Da Vinci’s Demons.

The Main Character is a Super Geek

Da Vinci's Demons 2013

Leonardo da Vinci is arguably one of the greatest inventors/artists/geniuses in history. He was always sketching new ideas that were incredibly advanced for his time, and that characteristic is front and center in Da Vinci’s Demons. He conceptualized things like a helicopter and a tank long before they could actually be made into existence. And, according to STARZ, da Vinci invented the bicycle, parachute, and even the robot, and had an estimated IQ of 220! His life as a super geek is fascinating and the series captures that, showing the struggles da Vinci had when trying to be taken seriously by his plebian peers. While the show does take more than a few liberties with the facts of da Vinci’s real life, it sticks to the foundation of what historians know while fleshing it out with some fiction.

There’s an Interesting Over-Arcing Plot

Da Vinci birds

Even though da Vinci’s inventions are heavily featured in the show, it’s not just a Renaissance-era Mister Wizard. There’s an interesting over-arcing plot, featuring forbidden love, betrayal, war, and da Vinci’s quest to find out information about his mother.

Nothing Comes Super Easy

Da Vinci's Demons 2013

With a character being as smart as da Vinci, it’d be really easy for the writers to have him do whatever he wants without any hassle- we see that in other shows where the main characters are so adept at what they do that everything always goes off without a hitch. Da Vinci, however, doesn’t have so easy. He gets into trouble, he gets caught, some of his bluffs are called, and whether he’ll fail or succeed will keep you consistently guessing.

Da Vinci’s Demons Celebrates Intelligence and Thinking Outside the Box

da vinci journals

The show features a nice amount of action, but doesn’t rely on violence to solve problems. Da Vinci doesn’t just use his fists and muscles to beat his way out of a situation (though he does fall back on them, on occasion). Mostly he uses a different and more powerful muscle- his brain. He outsmarts his opponents and manipulates people, all while being an advocate for others to use their own under-utilized grey matter.

It’s Created by David S. Goyer, Featuring Music by Bear McCreary

da vinci profile(1)

Who is David S. Goyer? He’s just the guy who wrote such titles as Blade, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Man of Steel. And Bear McCreary composed music for Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead, and The Sarah Connor Chronicles, so if you’re familiar with those shows you’ll know that he’s awesome at capturing a mood through music and then enhancing it.

Coming Attraction: Elysium (2013)

elysium-firstposter-full2

Director Neil Blomkamp is probably most known for his work on District 9, the low-budget, high-awesome sci-fi flick about aliens and apartheid. With Elysium, Blomkamp looks to be returning to the sci-fi genre with the same kind of social commentary and emotional maturity with which he approached District 9. Whether Elysium turns out to be a fun watch will remain to be seen, but the trailer looks neat! Elysium will hit theaters August 9.
