The Sorcerer’s Apprentice starts off making Balthazar (Nicholas Cage) look like a creepy pedophile. Good job guys! Don’t worry folks, this is not that kind of movie, and Balthazar mostly shakes off the creepy vibe pretty quickly.
Balthazar is a really old sorcerer who has spent many years looking for “the one.” Only this time he isn’t looking for a mate, he’s looking for the Prime Merlinian, the only person to inherit Merlin’s magical powers and is capable of stopping the ultimate evil sorcerer, Morgana. That so-called Prime Merlinian happens to be Dave (Jay Baruchel), a geeky, clumsy college student. Thus, Dave becomes the sorcerer’s apprentice to learn how to use his powers to save the world.
The film is rated PG. That’s the biggest problem for this Action Chick, but I recognize that not every film can be or needs to be rated R. As an action film, it’s pretty friggin’ tame. It does have some great special effects, though; They didn’t come off as too cheesy or too fake, so kudos on that part. There were a lot of attempts at ‘humor’ and ‘character growth’ a.k.a blah, blah, blah. This film would be heaven for anyone looking for a family movie that isn’t about animated talking/dancing animals. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice did a passable job as an action film and salute to Fantasia.
Time Action Starts: ~ 11 minutes
Action Rating: 2 ½ Mops, out of 5.
This is the Action Flick Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!
My love for Jay Baruchel remains unaltered.
