Iron Man 2 (2010)

I went to see Iron Man 2 Friday. And on the way to the theater, my pals and I were discussing what Iron Man does when he’s suited up but he has to go to the bathroom, an issue that I’m sure you’ve all wondered about. Well, wonder no more, because little did we know that just a few short minutes from when we were discussing that topic, Iron Man would answer our question in the movie. I’m not going to give the answer away, though, so if you want to know for yourself you’ll just have to see the film.

At end of Iron Man, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) revealed that he was the great superhero Iron Man. Iron Man 2 picks up from there and continues as Stark struggles to keep his Iron Man suits and technology to himself while several baddies try to copy the secrets of his power. One man succeeds and he comes to be known as Whiplash (Mickey Rourke). Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Stark, and their new assistant Natalie Rushman (Scarlett Johansson) must find a way to stop this new foe before it’s too late.

I loved Iron Man 2. It isn’t as good as the first one, of course, but as far as sequels go, it was a great one. I was let down on the action though. It was sparse in the beginning and didn’t get much better. However, there was a great action sequence in the end like most films, but (minor spoiler alert) I felt like they defeated the main baddie too quickly. I would have loved to see a longer battle going on, but I guess this one was supposed to be about plot. Go figure.

Robert Downey Jr. did an excellent job with his quick dialogue and improvisation. Scarlett Johansson was awesome during the few moments she got to kick some butt, though I would have loved to see them use her a little more. Samuel L. Jackson reprised his role as Nick Fury and…it’s Samuel L. Jackson! ‘nuff said.

Minor Spoilers below!

Time Until Action Starts: ~ 32 minutes.

Baddies: Whiplash!!!

Best Line: “What Howard Stark did to my family over 40 years, I will do to you in 40 minutes.” – Whiplash. Ooooh, menacing!

Best Kill: A great kill doesn’t always have to be seen to have an effect on you. Whiplash is being guarded by two men. These men took his bird, his shoes, and his pillows, just because they could. The camera cuts away to another scene. When it comes back to Whiplash, it just shows him sitting in the foreground petting his bird, with two pairs of legs swinging from the ceiling. Ouch! Note to self: don’t touch Whiplash’s birdie!

Best Explosion: It was a freakin’ thunderstorm of explosions! Iron Man is being chased by a butt ton of robots, and he manages to weave in and out of their shots only for them to hit a parking lot full of cars below causing a symphony of explosions.

Action Rating: 3 Farting Missiles, out of 5

  1. That Whiplash line was good, but I gotta go with “Nice job, kid” for my personal pick. By the way, which do you think was a worse line: “… the riddle of your heart,” or “I’ve got my eye on you”?

  2. I will say, I actually kind of liked this one better than the first one. I thought Vanko was a great villain, even somewhat sympathetic. I really like what they did with Tony’s character by bringing his alcoholism into the story. From the trailers I thought it was going to be a bit too overloaded with characters but they made it work really well.

I thought the movie incredible. It had wicked special effects and tons of action in it.

  4. Mr.I says:

All hail Iron Man 2. It was slow at times yes but as a sequel it doesn’t get any better. I really hope Disney does not destroy the movie experience for the comic book fans.

Iron Man 2 was a letdown for me, hardly enough action. And all the smart witty parts that I enjoyed so much about the first one weren’t there. Scarlett Johansson had one of the best action sequences and I wasn’t expecting her to outshine Iron Man in any regards. The beginning and the end were good but the whole middle of the film (the majority) was bland and full of too much talking (and not the clever kind of dialogue). It wasn’t Transformers 2 disappointing but it wasn’t great either.

  6. Ryse Edwards says:

Iron Man 2 trailers were impressive but had fears. Most of the sequels lets us down……..But IM2 didn’t.Introduction of Don Cheadle as Rhodes,Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko,Scarlett Johanson as Natasha Romanoff & Samuel L jackson as Nick Fury were the best………As in Iron Man Robert Downey Jr gave a stunning performance…………The special effects, the story, the synchronisation, the direction……..were at the best…….We always expect a lot from a sequel…………But most of the sequels for an action packed sci-fi gives importance to action and special effects not to the story………………This movie is 1 hell of a ride………

IronMan 2 intorduces IronMan#3 & friends;; But should not be Dilluted by having a Copy[cat Iron-person as Partner;;Either His {Starks statement} He& IRONMAN ARE “ONE:: ;That maintains his Position Of Human frailities;;and # of Side=kicks needed :: **don;t like the idea of Twins;; thanks for time& space ,,Katrina;;Have a Blessed day…Barnoah

  9. IM2 was a solid sequel. Downey is perfect in the role, yet again. We needed more Whiplash and less Justin Hammer, though.
