I have not seen Brothers, nor do I want to so I will be posting a spoiler for everyone who wants to know what happens. This sounds like a horribly unpleasant movie, as it’s about the difficult topic of war and what happens to our brave soldiers. Sam (Tobey Maguire) is the soldier who is leaving for Afghanistan for his fourth tour. He gets captured and tortured. He is forced to kill his friend who was captured with him, leaving him forever scarred. Who can blame him? He’s eventually rescued, though, which is good.
Meanwhile, back in the United States, Sam’s wife, Grace (Natalie Portman), is trying to make do without her husband. Sam’s brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), is the family screw up. He was just released from jail for armed robbery and is trying to win his way back into the family’s good graces by helping out Grace with much needed kitchen repairs. They are told that Sam was presumed dead after a helicopter crash, so they bond while mourning together. They kiss, and then decide that was stupid and nothing else comes of that.
Sam comes home and freaks out at the idea of his brother and his wife having sexual relations (even though they didn’t) and grabs his gun. He is talked out of hurting anyone and committing suicide and gets put into a mental hospital. Sam finally talks to Grace about what happened in Afghanistan. He confesses that he was forced to kill his friend. They hug and then a voice over explains Sam wondering if he will ever be able to lead a normal life. Sound like fun?
This is the Action Flick Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!

It’s actually a remake of a 2004 Danish movie of the same name. I thought both films were decent. But the American version did do up the torture on a bigger scale than the Danish film did.
it’s a good thing I wasn’t planning on seeing the movie because that sounds like a terrible movie.
So the very first time I saw the trailer for this, I pretty much assumed this entire wrap up. And rolled by eyes doing so. Thank god I didn’t pay the $10+ to see it.

I am with you, I don’t even want to see this, I saw the preview, looks like it said all there needed to be said – also, looks like another one of Hollywood’s attempts to vilify returning veterans. NO THANKS!
This looks like one of those movies that you go see only if you are a huge fan of one of the stars. It sounds very depressing and sad.
Yes, this movie def sound like fail. In fact, I’ll spread the word…Amen. (no offense to God). hehe
Thanks for posting this… I was like half an hour in and thought “I really don’t like where this thing’s going but I want to know what happened”. Thanks for saving 1 hour of my life.
I truly appreciate this post. I’ll be applying these insights the when I am working. You’ve made my day! Thx again. I have been looking everywhere for this!
