Blood on the Canvas: Ip Man

Ip-Man-photo-02

Blood on the Canvas, son! This new series of articles will focus on some of the best combat sport fights in film/TV history. I’m not talking about back alley brawls, I mean those tournament-of-blood smackdowns that get your heart pumping and leave you speechless due to the sheer awesomeness of it all.  This week’s fight comes from Ip Man, featuring Ip Man (Donnie Yen) throw down against ten black belt fighters. If you haven’t seen this flick yet, just watch the fight and you’ll want to get it immediately.

I could watch that fight all day long. Has there been another tournament style match that pits one vs. ten? The fact that Ip Man completely obliterates the guys without even breathing hard earns him a golden chicken from this Action Chick.

If you’ve got any favorite TV/movie combat sport moments, please let me know and I’ll try to feature it!

This is the Action Flick Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!

You wanna see a guy take on a school of martial artists without breathing heavy, how about FIST OF LEGEND w Jet Li? It’s pretty all around perfect for a martial arts film, with a great “exhibition” match vs. a Japanese master and a brutal final fight vs. military goosestepping jerkface.

I’ll throw THE WORLD’S END atcha for some wonderfully choreographed and shot pub fu with style. Fun and kinetic stuff with bonus result thanks to the heroes’ opponents. =)

DRUNKEN MASTER 2 for the crazy finale fight vs. the kick master.

Also, ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA 2, for Jet Li vs. Donnie Yen. Pole technique vs. towel snapping! =)

  2. Yes, yes, yes, and OH YEAH! Great suggestions! The World’s End did have some surprisingly good brawling in it- I was pleasantly surprised by all the drunken smackdowns.

I also love that scene from Ip Man (and the entire movie). The scene from Ip Man 2 where Donnie Yen fights Sammo Hung on a small round tabletop is great, too (but not 1-on-10 great). For another one of those, the scene Jet Li’s FoL scene is based on is a fine example: Bruce Lee’s fight against the entire Japanese Karate school in The Chinese Connection. And, of course, Bruce’s fight against the guards in Enter the Dragon will always be my fave!

  5. This might be my new hangout cuz I love action, adventure and martial arts books and movies. I’ve seen Enter the Dragon and Fist of Legend so many times that it ain’t even funny. Grew up on Bruce Lee, fell in love with Jet Li, and think Donnie Yen is the cat’s pajamas! Meow…
