Sin City (2005)

Sin City is, shall we say, a very unique movie. For one thing, it’s a combination of three different stories happening in the same place. Also, the movie is in black and white except for certain items throughout the movie. For instance, one of the stories is about a yellow man. The yellow man is the bad guy and he is actually colored yellow. This looks really cool next to everything else being black and white. Then there are other things like a girl’s hair or blood that are colorized to add to that effect.

Sin City is a very different movie. Me, myself, I never read any of the Sin City comics so maybe I don’t appreciate the movie as much as others would. The whole movie was very flat and had absolutely no humor, which makes it boring for me. Even the action was kinda boring. There was a lot of implied action: implied torture, implied kills. Forget that, I want to see the torture; I want to see the killing and decapitations, none of that panning away and letting your imagination take over. I watch TV, I don’t have an imagination.

The first story was the most interesting to me. It was about a serial killer who rapes and kills young girls. Bruce Willis is the hero in this part. He saves a little girl, Nancy from the claws of this serial killer by shooting off this guys ear, hand, and junk (balls). Willis called the murderers junk his “other weapon.” Finally, the right punishment for rapists. Too harsh? Unfortunately, the story goes on because the killer doesn’t die. You can watch the rest of the flick to find out what happens.

The other stories involve a city that is run by powerful uber-prostitutes fighting off mercenaries, trying to keep their city in their control; and a man seeking revenge for the death of a prostitute that actually slept with him for free. How sweet. That’s not good business practice, though. Anyway, it’s a weird and crazy movie that goes on for more than 2 hours. It really depends on the person watching as to whether or not they would like the movie.

Time until the action gets started: ~ 9 minutes

Guys getting killed (Bad guys): Everyone

Best Line: Marv (Mickey Rourke) is about to be killed by two hitmen, but then he turns the tide on them saying, “I love hitmen. Whatever you do to them, you don’t feel bad.” Umm, remind me to cross that occupation off my list of ‘dream jobs’.

Best Kill: There are a lot of painful looking kills in this movie, but then again, any kill would be painful. The one that really stuck out in my mind would have to be Marv killing Kevin (Elijah Wood). Marv cuts off Kevin’s arms and legs. Marv then ties him to a tree and lets Kevin’s own wolf start eating him. The wolf finally gets full and Kevin is still alive, so Marv decides to decapitate him. Whatever happened to just one bullet killing a man?

Best Explosion: This would be the only explosion in this movie. In the prostitutes vs. mercenaries story, there is yet another decapitated head (different guy, not Elijah Wood) that these people are fighting over. So one guy offers a trade to the mercenaries: one decapitated head for one prostitute in captivity. The twist is that there is a grenade in the decapitated head and once the trade is made, it explodes knocking all of the mercenaries over. This gives the prostitutes time to pull out their guns and kill all the mercenaries.

Rating: 2 decapitated heads with avant-garde rain, out of 5
