Must Watch Movies from the ’80s: Big Trouble in Little China (1986)!

If you weren’t alive in the ’80s there’s a good chance that you haven’t seen a lot of the movies from that decade. Well, you are missing out my friends. There’s just something magical about ’80s movies that’s hard to describe. It was also the prime time for the action hero – beefy men running around killing things! Yeah!

One of my favorite films from the ’80s is Big Trouble in Little China. Kurt Russell stars as Jack Burton, a truck driver who finds himself in the middle of underground Chinatown fighting an ancient Chinese sorcerer, Lo Pan (James Hong). Burton is on a mission to help his friend, Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), save his girlfriend from Lo Pan…and to get his truck back that was also stolen by Lo Pan.

This is a crazy movie that you really have to pay attention to or else it won’t make a whole lot of sense, but it sure is a lot of fun, even if you don’t understand everything. Jack Burton is by far my favorite character from Big Trouble in Little China. He’s the incompetent, selfish “hero.” He’s always accidentally taking himself out of the big fights either by knocking himself out or accidentally throwing his knife across the room and then having to chase it down while the others take care of the baddies. Oh, Jack! You silly bastard.

I used to watch this film as a child and it’s really interesting to see it through adult eyes. You always catch things you never did even though you’ve seen it 100 times. For instance, the woman Burton and Chi spend the whole movie rescuing has about three lines and those are one word barely noticeable sentences. Can’t believe I never noticed that before! Oh well. At least she didn’t have to spend much time memorizing the script.

Big Trouble in Little China is on instant queue on Netflix! Here’s your chance to watch a fun and crazy, magical, martial arts movie. It has a couple of really good fight scenes and the rest is filled with insanity!

Action Rating: 3 Crazy Chinese Sorcerers, out of 5!

One of my favorite movies, ever. I’m pretty much always up for it, and when it’s over, I’m ready to drive everyone off the couch by watching “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.”

Favorite quote: “It’s all in the reflexes.”

    Who doesn’t enjoy BTiLT?
The characters were so wonderfully silly, and he had a rig called the ‘Porkchop Express’.
WHY? We don’t know! But it’s Jack Burton. We don’t care!
    It’s that kinda movie. 😀

Big Trouble In Little China is probably my favorite goofy action flick from the ’80s. The first time I watched it was on VHS, on a cheapy front loading VCR that was so sad that it had the remote control on a wire attached to the machine. I watched it straight through and then rewound it and watched it again…four more times. Good times!

What a great action flick. Love but love. I notice there’s an opening for a sequel in its last sequence. Maybe Hollywood can stop re-booting movies that don’t need it. and come up with a sequel that needs to be made!

  7. my friends and I were just talking about this movie this morning! Kurt Russell was awesome in the 80’s! retweeting!
