The Lost Boys (1987)

“A last fire will rise behind those eyes, Black house will rock, blind boys don’t lie, Immortal fear, that voice so clear, Through broken walls, that scream I hear,
Cry, little sister – Thou shall not fall, Come to your brother – Thou shall not die,
Unchain me, sister – Thou shall not fear, Love is with your brother – Thou shall not kill”
– “Cry Little Sister”

Anyone else think this song is creepy besides me? I still love it. It’s just the right amount of creepy; however, looking at the lyrics, does anyone else see that this brother and sister’s relationship is a little odd? Maybe they’re just a little too close? Oh well, love the one you’re with, right? Anyway, this is the theme song to The Lost Boys, and what a theme song it is. In the first movie alone, this song is played four different times throughout. It does add a creepy feeling to the movie, but good grief, Charlie Brown, four times. The movie is basically just one long music video for the song.

The Lost Boys is definitely an 80’s movie in all its glory. It’s got the wardrobe (like guys showing their midriff and bright crazy colors), the hair (the crazy big frizzy hair), and the earrings (of course every vampire should have one…or twenty). I am sure back when it first came out it was creepy and eerie as hell because it still is somewhat today. However, it was probably not as funny as it is today. I love watching old movies because of the cheesy dialogue, crazy outfits, and odd mannerisms.

It’s great, you should try a sample, see if you want to order up the entire dish. For example, Corey Haim’s character, Sam, is supposed to be a teenager in this movie. Well he gets scared and asks his mommy if he can sleep with her in her bed. OMG! You’re a teenager. How about you grow a pair and kill any vampires that come into your room. Freakin’ nursery school.

Corey Feldman is the main person I like watching in The Lost Boys, but he doesn’t show up until ~13 minutes into the movie. Booooo. More Feldman and less Richard Gilmore (Edward Herrmann) (if you know what character I’m talking about, then congratulations, you are as big of a nerd as I am). Bill from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure also is in this movie. SPOILER: He dies. End of story. Keanu isn’t even around to shed a little tear for him.

Even though this movie is about vampires, you never see them as such until the movie is almost over. So, very little action and lots of suspenseful weirdness would describe this movie. The Lost Boys is a fun classic to watch every now and then, especially around Halloween.

Time until vampire related action: ~ 64 minutes, I am not even kidding. There are a few scares and people you know are vampires, but no one full on vamps out until 64 minutes into the movie.

Guys getting killed (Bad guys): Vampires

Best Line: Sam (Corey Haim) just found out that is brother is turning into a vampire. And this is the words of wisdom that he bestows upon his brother:
“You’re a vampire, Michael. A G**D*** S*** sucking vampire! Wait til mom finds out buddy… You better get a garlic covered t-shirt buddy or it’s your funeral.”

Best Kill: The two Frog brothers (Feldman and Jamison Newlander) are upstairs in the bathroom looking for vampires. One comes up behind them and is about to get them. They push away from the vampire just in time for the family pet dog to come and karate kick the vampire into the bathtub, which they filled earlier with holy water and garlic. The two Frogs are holding each other on the bathroom floor and screaming as the vampire melts and burns and dies. Yay doggy!

Best Explosion: It’s down to the fight between the head vampire, Richard Gilmore, and everyone else. Right as it looks like Richard might win, the crazy grandpa drives through the living room wall with his truck carrying fence posts. One of the fence posts shoots over the top of the truck and stakes Richard in the heart. The force pushes him into the fireplace where he explodes. This is an unnatural, massive explosion. I haven’t killed a lot of vampires but this is definitely the biggest explosion I have seen come from a vampire’s demise.

Best Narrow Escape: The Frog brothers and Sam are sneaking into the vampire headquarters to kill the head vampire. The vampires are all sleeping upside down hanging from the ceiling. They come across Bill Preston (Alex Winter) and decide to stab him first. Well, he goes out viscously and loudly, waking all the other sleeping vampires. The vampires chase the three boys out of the lair, several times just missing from grabbing their feet and sucking their blood. Luckily it was daylight outside so the vampires can’t follow.

Rating: 1 crazy 80’s vampire, out of 5
