Is That Who I Think It Is: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)!

Remember the 1992 movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer? I, myself, love that movie. Of course, the television series is way better in every way, but the film has some charming qualities, one of which being the cast, a combination of great 90’s actors like Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry and a few then-unknown faces, such as…

Hilary Swank. Seeing Hilary Swank in Buffy made my jaw drop. She plays a prissy “valley girl” who is all about fashion and being popular, the type of character that seems like all the rats running the wheels in her head are out on break…a very long break. I was so baffled by this just because the movies I know Swank from are Iron Jawed Angels and Million Dollar Baby. She plays characters with a tiny bit more depth in those movies, but it is a lot of fun to see Swank in an early role like this one.

Another surprise guest is Ben freakin’ Affleck. He has one line and doesn’t even get credited, but he does get to show off a basketball move or two. Oh, and even Ricki Lake has a small role. Remember her? Depending on your age, you may not. I barely do. Seth Green, who most will recognize as a Buffy tv show alumni, was in one scene but sadly it was cut. That’s okay though. Better he be remembered as Oz than Skater Punk #2.

Another actor who may take you by surprise is Paul “Please, call me Pee-Wee” Reubens as a villainous vampire henchman. It doesn’t look like him at all! Oh, and David Arquette plays a goofy guy turned into a goofy, but bad, vampire. Seems like wherever David goes, goofiness follows.

One more person I had no idea was in the film until I checked IMDB preparing to write this article is Hung star, vegan police officer Thomas Jane! Apparently, he plays a character named Zeph. Now, I’m going to have to go back and watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer again just so I can find him.

If it’s been awhile since you’ve seen this film, now is a good time to revisit it and enjoy the 90’s extravaganza! You’ll have to watch carefully, if you blink you might miss some of the now more famous people.

OMG – I had no idea so many famous names were in that film. See, what would we do without you Action Chick!

As much as I love Buffy (& the 90’s) I cannot endure sitting through that movie. I’ve seen it twice, that’s twice more than I’d like.

  4. Yes, indeed, this movie has some of the best cameos, except at the time, they weren’t really cameos, just actors trying to get by.

The way the academy digs hillary s#!t, I’m surprised she didn’t get nominated for this role too.

Pee Wee’s death scene in this movie is fantastic too.

Have you checked out The Inside yet?

Wait so even before Hilary Swank was The Next Karate Kid (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110657/) she was in this? The joys of youth.

  6. Rick Swift says:

I guess I am “old” because I actually saw this in the theater in 92, also, this was the movie wherein I decided never to get a large soda, because I had to piss like a race-horse half the movie, but I forced myself to endure the pee pains . . .

I love watching older movies and finding newly popular actors hidden in the cast like this, got any more?

  7. Even weirder, though Seth Green was cut out of the film, a screen shot of him is on the back of the original video box.
