Interview: Milynn Sarley the Gamer Chick (Team Unicorn, Attack of the Show!)

Milynn Sarley reads The Feed on G4TV AOTS

In September, Milynn Sarley and her fellow Team Unicorn members Michele Boyd, Clare Grant, and Rileah Vanderbilt and I discussed their “G33k & G4m3r Girls” video (a.k.a. the “Geek and Gamer Girls Song”) which they had just released on Break.com and which hit its first million views that same week.  Since then, the video passed two million views, got featured on Spike TV’s Scream Awards, and stirred up all kinds of controversy, and the Team Unicorn members have stayed busy. Milynn did a segment for the G4TV entertainment news series Attack of the Show! right before AOTS took a week off, and then she co-hosted the show with host Kevin Pereira for the entire next week.

In the months since Olivia Munn first took time off from Attack of the Show! to play Leigh on the NBC sitcom Perfect Couples along with joining Comedy Central’s The Daily Show correspondents, AOTS has rotated through various guest co-hosts and Feed readers like No Good TV’s Carrie Keagan and IGN staff writer Jessica Chobot. So the Action Flick Chick just had to ask the Gamer Chick how her turn came about.

AFC: The last time we spoke, when I asked what you had coming up, you didn’t mention
anything about how you’d be co-hosting Attack of the Show. Had that opportunity not
come up yet or was it one of the projects you didn’t want to jinx by talking about
them ahead of time?

Milynn: The opportunity had not come up yet.

AFC: When you’re co-hosting AOTS, what’s the workday like?

Milynn: It’s crazy. First thing is the read-through with the whole team. Off to hair and makeup while looking over “The Feed” and trying to cram some lunch in. Then immediately rushed to set for rehearsals…and then BAM live show! And before you can blink, your day is over.

AFC: What surprised you about doing the show?

Milynn: It was my first time doing live TV. The way the show is produced and how smoothly things run to make this amazing product blows my mind!

AFC: I was surprised by how small the studio is, with X-Play there in the room right next to AOTS. You looked like you grew more comfortable as the week went by. And Kevin seemed very supportive and encouraging.

Milynn: Definitely on both counts. It’s always tough being the new kid coming on to an established crew…but everyone made me feel so welcome. I felt I definitely got the hang of things by the second day. And Kevin is awesome – he is so funny and full of energy it is great being able to play off of him.

AFC: Are you going to do the show again soon?

Milynn: We’ll see. 🙂

AFC: You happened to be the last Attack of the Show! co-host that some viewers will see for the time being – those who get their TV through the DirecTV satellite provider. The Monday after you did your week there, DirecTV dropped G4TV from their programming because G4 seemed pointless to them. What would you say is the “point” of G4TV?

Milynn: It makes me so sad! The “point” of G4 I think is that it is one of the only networks out there making shows for the Geek/Gamer/Nerd genre which used to be this tiny little niche market but has grown and become a huge part of mainstream culture. Look at shows like The Walking Dead. I think 5 years ago people would have laughed at the idea of a zombie drama being successful. I believe G4 is a huge reason why shows like that are successful and are now being valued and appreciated by mainstream markets.

AFC: Thank you so much. I’d have suggested we do this while playing a game over Xbox Live, but I’m not real chatty while I’m killing people (or zombies or cyborgs or…).

Milynn: Agreed! It’s tough to do an interview while you game. Plus it would probably just be me saying a bunch of expletives!

Make your voices heard! On November 1, DirecTV dropped G4TV from its selection of channels, choosing not to renew the same basic terms they’d had with the channel for the preceeding 3 years. My access to G4 recently got ganked by Direct TV. I understand the politcs behind it, yet I’m still livid. Is there any way to access AOTS online???

Geek Girls were shocked when DirecTv dropped G4? What?! No ComicCon coverage? Ugh! I went to work for DISH Network mainly because G4 is huge there. I am wearing my Attack of the Show button as I blog. I have to say in programming there is no worry trying to compare, DirectTV dropped the ball on this one!
