Buffy the Vampire Slayer reBOOt!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ReBOOt!

I am definitely a Buffy The Vampire Slayer fan and was horrified to find out that Warner Bros. has decided to reboot the original movie. It may not sound so bad right now; however, this reboot is not going to be created by Joss Whedon, the mastermind who brought us Buffy in the first place. Nope, the new Buffy film will be written by an unknown Whit Anderson, who has no writing experience that I can find. Reportedly, she is a fan of the television series but will that really make up for the lack of Joss Whedon? It’ll be near impossible. I’ve got to give her some credit, though, for taking on such a huge project. It is very brave of her (or stupid?) to take on one of the most beloved heroines in TV history, because I’m sure she will be at the business end of a lot of hatred from diehard Buffy fans.
I just wish Hollywood would quit being a-holes looking for a way to make a few quick and easy bucks by rebooting fairly recent titles and then hiring an unknown writer/crew just because they can pay them less. I guess that’s just the way it is but I can still say BOO to your reboot.

The response from the people involved with the television show has been pretty universally negative. Joss Whedon himself has been quoted as telling E!’s Kristen Dos Santos:

This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself…But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

I don’t see this new reboot going over well with anyone, but maybe we will all be pleasantly surprised. What do you think?

I’m interested to see what this person will do with the film. The original film was so spectacularly bad that I wasn’t expecting a lot from the television series. Of course, I was more than pleasantly surprised, I was lifted into an entirely different echelon.

I think that anyone that takes on rehashing Whedon’s world is in for a lot of insecurity. I wish them the best though and I will definitely give the movie a chance.

It is a travesty that Joss isn’t involved (as reflected on twitter for the past few days) and I have to agree, it is way too soon to consider a reboot. If anything I would have liked a final movie to wrap everything up with the original cast can Joss writing it.

People still have “Vampire Fever” and with The Twilight trilogy winding down and Tru Blood & The Vampire Diaries getting lower ratings, Hollywood is grasping at one more time to make movies out of the blood suckers.

I absolutely agree with you on every level! Buffy was my favourite show on TV, and it should be left untouched unless Whedon and the original cast from the series decided to reunite for a movie. That would be amazing, but this reboot is unnecessary and we as fans deserve better. The first movie sucked, why will this one without Whedon would be any better? Hollywood has to stop with this stupid reboot thing they have going.

  5. Mikal says:

The series itself was a reboot, so to speak. It had nothing in common with the original movie of the same name. The original was a comedy with an airhead cheerleader as Buffy.

  6. OnyxSparrow says:

Meh… There’s nothing left to do with the series, so anything they try to make is simply an attempt to grab nostalgia money on something before it completely falls off as a fond memory of past TV. Not having Whedon involved just makes me all the more sure that it isn’t going to cut it. And having a “long time fan of the show” write the script? Since it’s an unknown and not an established writter they at least shouldn’t try to make their own vision, but I can only predict copious amounts of Fanservice.

We’ll have to see though. In any case, this isn’t likely in the least to be a boxoffice smash of any kind… it’s prime popularity if it hits at all will be in DVD sales, just to be added into the Cheese Move collections.

  7. Next thing you know somebody’ll try to make a new Star Trek movie, amirite?

  8. Arol says:

If they were rebooting the show without Joss Whedon then I could get behind the anger. Or even if the original film still had some place in Joss’s heart but they aren’t and it doesn’t. Buffy was the show, the film is nobody’s Buffy. I want to see what Whit Anderson does with it.

Besides, there are still plenty of fans of the original film who despise and refuse to watch a show for the same reason people are objecting to this new film now. They can mostly be found on Elfwood.

  9. Arol says:

And that should have been “His Buffy was the show”

I agree that Hollywood needs to get some NEW stuff, original stories etc. But I do realise this is the quick way they make money. To be honest, if I were the ‘Hollywood God’, in this economy – I would go for the fast buck as well. Business is business no matter what industry.

For this ‘Buffy Re-boot’, it would be SUPER if Joss, original cast/crew etc were behind it. But they are not and there is nothing to be done about it. I am a huge Buffy fan and do not expect too much from this new film. Having said that – I will not however not give the new film a chance. If for no other reason, curiosity. I bet there will be droves of Buffy fans see the new film for the same reason, curiosity.

After that, then I will know if I like/dislike/appreciate or hate it.

Oh wow! This is news to me. It’s so crazy to hear about all of these re-boots. The last re-boot I heard that was in the making was “Total Recall.” I guess nowadays, it’s really rare to see originality when it comes to Hollywood. Hopefully, that will change in the future. 🙂

  12. Lis Fies says:

It’s not going to change. Even the A list screenwriters have drawers full of original screenplays that they can’t get anyone to read. It’s not about a lack of original ideas in Hollywood. It’s about MBA business men working for corporations running the studios. Why? Because you’re all pirating movies, and all they can afford to make are 100 million “Event” movies you’ll come to the theatres to see in 3D before you pirate it and watch it at home. Voila! No more 20 million dollar original films.

    Who is “YOU”?

I have no idea. But there are MILLIONS of you, and you keep making dreck like TRANSFORMERS 2 huge hits. All Hollywood is doing is giving you what you’re supporting with your dollar. You want it different; go pay to see an “original” film in a theatre.
